Snowy Squirrel Hunt
« on: January 27, 2019, 10:19:40 AM »
Squirrels sure are tough. I was sneaking along and located a gray squirrel going back and forth with forage. There was a sharp bank that when he went back I could slowly sneak up without him noticing. It was snowing pretty hard too so that helped. I had my STOS heads and some Talon small game heads along with my 56” Timberhawk. My plan was to use the broadheads on any shot that wasn’t going straight into a tree. I finally popped over the 30’ bank and there he was on the side of a tree. I had my STOS ready and he moved to The far part of the oak and was munching. I slipped the broadhead back in my Thunderhorn and grabbed the Talon. Of course it’s a squirrel and they don’t stay put. At 20yds he changed and started on the side of the tree when I shot. Had a good spot on his side by the shoulder to aim so I did. Heard a thump and the squirrel, knocked off the tree 3’, took off and that was that. I hit just where I was looking. No blood, just hair. Durn!  Should have waited for a head shot.

Not 50yds past the melee I came across 6 deer walking the ridgeline in the snow. A beautiful sight. Got a small video of the last one, but can’t post videos on Tapatalk I guess.

The mind is a funny thing. I’ve been shooting 3 under for some time. Listened to G. Fred Asbell on the TradQuest podcast and remembered how accurate I was with a glove shooting split. I initially stopped because my index finger got rubbed raw by the nock. It took just a few shots and my mind took over and started drilling the target. Then I drilled that squirrel in the snow even though I didn’t take him home. It’s just funny.
