Fujimo,  I think that’s what Crooked Stic was saying; he’s just leaving the top and bottom 1” and flattening the middle 4”.  I didn’t know the drum was barrel shaped in the first place.

I’m digging my new Drum Sander, too.  I just successfully ground my own core lams for the first time ever.  That feels pretty cool.

How come no one ever uses Yew as a core lam?  I scored a couple of big live edge planks the other day.  There is some interesting grain in there, but most of it’s pretty straight, and I was thinking I could use it for core lams.

Yew is a very good core wood. It is not so easy to find clean wood such as yours.

Just to be clear, I know the lams in the picture are maple.  I think I may use some of the yew for core lams, though.  I lucked into these slabs; they were at a second use furniture store and a buddy told me about them.  Got two big chunks for $30 bucks each.

The drive drum can be flat. On the idler roller I wrapped electrical tape to create a barrel shape. Tracking for me is not an issue. What drum sander you get?

I got a Jet JWDS 1632; I found it on eBay new, but missing the stand.  I offered them $800, cause that’s how much I was going to pay for the smaller benchtop model.  I don’t know how it stacks up to other drum sanders, but it seems really consistent and quiet.  I was in the shop until 1am making my own lams and the old lady wasn’t even pissed (not about the noise, anyway).

Did you need to add the electrical tape to the idle roller for tracking even though the top and bottom 1” of the drive roller weren’t flattened?  Also, have you ever had anything happen like the other fella mentioned about his finger?

When I did the project I put the tape on because some suggested it would help. And yes I got the tip of my finger just recently.  :scared:

Fingers can be grabbed by any power sander!!  I ripped a finger open last year by a small belt sander. 36 grit has no mercy when the little piece your working on goes flying and there’s nothing between you and sander.

Now I wear gloves if my hands are gonna be close. Even thin gloves are better than none. The glove can give a little, skin not so much.

I had the center 4 inches flattened because that is what other guys were doing for tracking. I can see adding a little bulge to the idler would work too. I have a extra drive drum from Grizzly in case i want to go that route.

What’s a lignaphile?  Seems like I never remember to put on gloves until after I do damage to my hands.

Anyway, I sectioned off a strip of that yew last night and resawed it.  I still have to process it through the drum sander.  It took a little trial and error last night to get the maple lams just right for the bow I’m working on now.  It’s a black and white ebony riser and veneers using Kenny’s forward handle form.  I put a charcoal actionwood I beam with tan phenolic that will only show up in the sight window.

I was looking at wood options to pair up with the yew limbs, though, and I think Cocobolo looks good as a riser with it.  What other woods do you like with it?

I want to build one with pistachio veneers and a Claro Walnut riser.  Dan Toelke warned me to be careful of the pistachio, as it hides checks and could blow out, but I looked really closely and I don’t see anything of concern on this particular set.

i pretty much use yew as core lams exclusively- as thats what we have here.
and good pieces become staves for my self bows.

with flattening the roller- one can flatten the roller completely- a true cylinder, JUST as long as the other roller has a camber on it in order to ensure tracking.
leaving a bit of camber on the edges of the roller may or may not get in the way of the template sander- but whatever works best.

I looked it up.  I thought that’s what it meant; I had a friend call me a logophile the other day jokingly, and I said I thought I had seen the actual phrase or word somewhere but couldn’t remember it exactly and couldn’t think of where I’d seen it.

Why not just put a bearing or pin under the idler roller on the work surface that’s already mounted there?
