Who should I get to reduce weight on my recurve about 5 #s?
« on: February 04, 2019, 09:37:34 PM »
I would like to get my recurve reduced 5#s.  the Bowyer who built it charges way to much, could buy new limbs for that money.... who do you recommend? also would love the same Bowyer to do snake skins while he does the weight reduction.
Any names and info?  thanks, Steve

Don't know about the snake skins but Randy does great work and 5 # would be easy.

Hey man, i would be happy to talk with you about the weight reduction but I don’t do snake skins. If you’re interested give me a shout!

Crittergetter (Randy) did two for me, a longbow and a recurve.  Fantastic work, communication and price.  Bob Morrison is still doing skins.  In fact he’s doing some for me now.

I had  Randy/ crittergetter reduce the weight on one of my Schafer recurves, he did a great job with fast turn around.

5# is a piece of cake for any bowyer who is reducing weight.  Ask them how they are going to do it.  You either remove glass or taper the edges...tippit

Yes sir, I did about 20 last year.

You are correct.. I either round the edges, trap, or sand the belly. Sometimes it’s a combination of several methods. It varies for bow to bow depending on what the customer wants to achieve.
And sometimes I’ll decline to work on one if I don’t feel comfortable reducing a bow if it’s already been trapped a lot or is to narrow to comfortably reduce without cause limb fatigue. Recurves are typically a little trickier than longbows and usually can’t be reduced as much as a longbow because of limb and glass thickness.

Randy, you made reference to the process of trapping. What does that involve?

It is a process where you remove material from the edge of the limb on either the back or the belly at an angle and create a slight “trapezoid” shape to the limbs. It is very effective method for reducing weight, has a unique look, and gives a smoother draw. IMO
