Billet to lamination

Any advice or how too on taking a quarter split Osage billet to lamination. Wanting to make a few natural in the Schultz style.

So far frustration on trying to get two flats using band saw.

What jig might you be using.

I cut 1/4 sawn slabs off the stave, leaving them about 3/8th thick x 36" long x whatever the stave gives ya width wise.

Then I use a yardstick and lay out a 2 inch wide section and cut that out on the bandsaw.

Then run those through my drum sander reducing to 1/4" thick.

Yep that's what I want to do however how do you support the uneven quarter splint log to get your 1/4 lams?

Cut a slice off it first on the bark side to make it flat.

Make it look like my triangle picture above first.

Got you I have been trying the side and top of triangle. What size bandsaw you running I have a 14 and the band around lower wheel is sliding off the back and kicking blade off. Do I need to tune better or is 14 to small for dense osage Billet?

My saw is 14 inch.

Sounds like you need new tires and tune up the saw.

You should make and use a sled for the first two cuts...  After that just run it along the fence...  Look on You Tube for Ideas on sleds...

Tires could not remember what they were called, I will replace them.

I have been looking at some sled ideas most are for shorter lengths of wood and liter wood than Osage. Still messing though hope to find something that works.

Do a search on YouTube for bandsaw tuning.

Get the urethane tires...  Don't get rubber... You have to glue the rubber ones on and they get out of balance easy...

I use the OEM tires on my Jet with no problems.

I also cut my lams from 36 inch staves, much easier to handle.

Then I Z splice them together to create a full length bow lam.

Do you have a drum sander?

A drum sander is a must to do this.

The wheels on my saw have a lip on the edge and the tires sit down inside that edge.

Plainer not drum sander. I may have to go with something like Torges in his video using table saw. Once I have billets squared on two sides using band saw. New tires ordered, large bar clamp to make sled, won't be till after Christmas to try again.

If you want, get the lams cut out a bit oversize thickness wise and and widthwise at the length you want and send them to me.

I'll run them through the drum sander to whatever width and thickness you want and ship them back.

No charge on my end, you just cover shipping both ways.

Great offer Roy thanks. Doing it myself is important. Drum sander keeps coming up, may have to invest. Lots of folks use them for taper lams as well

OK new tires, tension spring, guide blocks, blade. Getting lams now.

Drum sander; grizzly 12 inch, or jet table top model, which would work best for making taper lams, or are either of them enough sander
