Broadhead help, please
« on: April 05, 2008, 12:01:00 AM »
I'd like to buy some broadheads fairly soon so I can make sure they shoot well and can practice with them. I've noticed that most broadheads available in the heavier weights are glue on type heads. I shoot 175 gr tips, are any traditional type heads available in screw-in style  for this weight? I'd like to shoot something traditional like Bears or Zwickey or something.

I made up some 200gr screw in heads with 125gr Magnus II glued onto a 75gr steel screw in adapter, seems to fly true for me. I've yet to bust some ribs with them yet but I think they'll do the job!

I used 125gr Zwickey glued to the long aluminum adapter last year to kill my deer. Total weight was 167grns.  Or get 100grn BH of your choice and glue them to the 75grn steel adapters.  That is how I usually get to the 175grn mark.  Good luck.

I glue my 145gr Ribteks onto the 75gr steel adapters and put them in front of my Beman Classics.  That gives me 220gr up front. The way my arrows are cut, it works out just fine.

Its kind of fun to play with the diffrent weights and see what they do to arrow flight.

What type of glue do you use,and how do you make sure they're on straight? Sounds like this may be the way to go.

I'm fairly new to this myself. I have been  using carbons and adding 100 gr brass inserts and just added 145 gr and 190 gr Tusker 2 blades.
At 20 yds they fly well and hit hard, but final tuning is still in the works.
I haven't performed any tests with the aluninum arrows yet.

I just use the amber colored Ferrule Tite..I think thats the name of it. Heat both the head and the insert up...make sure both are wiped down with alcohol and free from any machine oils...then slide them together.
I start spinning them to try to true them up before the glue even sets. If they wobble, keep putting the heat to it until you get it seated on there just right. When you spin it on the broadhead and it ain't got no wobble, I say you're good to go.   Good Luck!

A lot of good broadheads come in 125 grs.  With a Broadhead adapter from 3 Rivers  at 42 grs. added to the 125 = 162.  You won't be able to tell the dif with your current 175 FP.

Check Dr. Ashby's thread on snapping steel adapters before you use the 75 gr adapters.  Here's a link to the thread:  http://tradgang.com/noncgi/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=057615

I use 125g Zwickeys with 125g broadhead adapters to get 250g heads. I think you're best oftion is to use glue-on broadheads with broadhead adapters. Hope this has helped!
Like Fletcher has said, check Dr. Ashby's report before using 75g adapters. They're very weak!  ;)
