Quesrion about finger pressure
« on: June 03, 2019, 08:49:28 PM »
Well...I've been shooting now for 25 plus years..as far back as I can remember I have always deceloped a callous on my 3rd finger. I have checked and had several people look at my elbow and it doesnt appear to be high.I have been teying here lately to concentrate on using my middle finger with little success, yes now I do feel it some on my middle finger. My question is is it that big of a deal if I feel it more on my 3rd finger? Am I loosing efficiency or something by it? I am a fairly good shot. I forgot to mention I do shoot 3 under..why I got to wondering is couple of buddies got to talking about what finger they felt and they said their middle or index finger..just curious...thanks

I had the same issue for years, I tried to lower the elbow on my drawing arm but it was too uncomfortable. Finally I noticed what I was doing to cause so much pressure on my 3rd finger on my drawing hand. I was heeling the bow with my bow hand, so much that it was causing the bow to rotate downward when I drew the bow. The pressure on my 3rd finger was being caused because I was torquing the bow downward with my bow hand. I changed my grip to a higher wrist grip and it put the string tension evenly on all three fingers. This helped to further improve my form because it also allowed me to lower my elbow a small amount.

You should be able to solve this problem by taking a deep hook with your index and middle fingers, and just touching the pad of the ring finger to the string.  I think the closer the drawing force is to the arrow, the better and quieter the arrow will fly.  However, YMMV, and you will have to do your own tests to see if this works better for you.

This whole video (Tom Clum) is well worth watching, but to address your specific concerns, go to the 11:00 mark.  Enjoy.

I was about to post the exact same question though I've only been shooting 4 years. I've have found it got worse when I switched to a dynamic release with my string hand ending up on my shoulder. Since returning to a more dead release - hand ending up under my ear, it's almost gone away so I suspect I'm torquing the string somehow and as I like to shoot a very thin tab, I limit myself to shorter sessions than shooting dozens of arrows at a time.

Mind you, I do 'suffer' from a low digit ratio (where the ring finger is longer than the index), so I'm blaming my mum  :biglaugh:
