How about Mom?
« on: May 12, 2019, 10:57:33 AM »
Since this is Mother's Day, it is appropriate to recognize Mom's influence on our sporting activities. Most of us got interested in archery, hunting, and other outdoor activities based on the encouragement and tutelage of our fathers, grandpa, or an uncle. How many had mothers who played a major role in developing a desire to pursue these activities? Also, did Mom also participate with you in these interests?

My mother was not an outdoor girl, but she did give archery a try, and she did like to fish (didn't care for taking them off the hook, though). When I wanted to hunt, she saw danger in all of it (Mom saw great danger in EVERYTHING), whether with gun or bow, but did not try to stop me. She just emphasized safety and following hunting regs. Mostly, she stressed the need to study game and their habits in order to develop basic skills. I sometimes think her support played a major behind the scenes role in my growth as a hunter and outdoorsman. I imagine a lot of us benefitted from Mom's input, even if on those cold mornings, she was back home in her warm bed. How 'bout it?

I wish Sam, she died in my arms in 1985 as I gave her CPR (heart attack). Mom was a disabled champion archer who walked field courses while using crutches.

My sons mom and my wife died just this past March 24th after fighting cancer for 5 years.

You guys that have wives and moms , hug them and don't quit.

If I’d have waited for my parents to show me the outdoor ways, my favorite hobby would be reading books or something. I love my parents dearly but they had nothing outdoorsy or hunting about them!! When my mom was alive, I’d tell her about an exciting hunting trip I had been on, and she would jokingly accuse me of not being her son!!!! 🤣🤣🤣

My Mom cooked all the game my brothers and I brought home. She always encouraged us to "get alone" in the woods. I think she knew it was/is a place to meditate upon life and the Creator's goodness. She knew we would be better men for the time we spent afield. She was wise and very LOVING!

I miss my Mom who passed away a few years ago. This year I finally got my first turkey with the recurve... it was on April 25th, Mom's birthday. I am not surprised.

Happy Mother's day to all.

For me it was my grand mom who new and understood the outdoors.  Always took her fresh squirrels in the fall and she baked them in cream sauce.   Damn those were good.

I think in one way or another our MOMS influenced us weather they were into our sport or not, be it school sports, anything hunting, or what ever you were into growing up, they always seemed to fuel our fire.  It must be something engrained into them, at 50 years young, I am realizing how much influence my MOM had on my life.  I am grateful that I was able to wish her a Happy Mothers Day again today, and thank her for helping me to be the man I am today.  I hope that all the Tradgang Moms have had, or are having a great day with their families.  God Bless.

My Mother turns 91 this year.  She was more of a beach lady than a woods lady.  Taught me how to swim in Lake Michigan, cheered me on at all my football games, basketball games and track meets and always encouraged me to hunt and fish with my Father.  She seemed to enjoy listening to my Father and I tell stories of the hunt, but she hated washing our stinky fishing and hunting clothes.  She taught me how to treat a lady like a lady which has served me well over the years.

Happy Mothers Day Mother.  Love You!   :clapper:

My mom wasn't really the outdoorsy type before she met my dad. Even now I think she's only ever gone hunting once. However, she has always been super supportive of all of our hunting and fishing adventures, and whenever we get back she's always the first one to come outside and check the back of the truck to see if we had any luck. Even though she doesn't hunt, she showed lots of interest in archery so my dad got her a bow so that she can shoot with us. She doesn't fish a lot either, but always goes and spends summer evenings with us on the boat. Every now and then she'll throw a line in the water and it seems like catch the biggest fish of the trip every time. I'm still trying to get her to go hunting with me at some point, and hopefully I can make it happen. If not though, I'm sure she'll still be running out the door when I pull in the drive to see if I had any luck. I'm definitely blessed to have the mom that I do!

My mom wasn’t outdoorsy at all.  She still supported me and my dad in our endeavours. We road hunted growing up and mom was usually in the truck with my dad if I wasn’t. She only went out a couple times with me. My favourite thing was when we went to the local gravel pit and she knocked a tennis ball all over the place shooting my right handed .22 left handed.

She’s been gone nine years and I miss her every day.

Mothers day is passed but I've got to tell of my mothers influence on me. She was an avid reader and she use to read to me every night at bed time. That was before the days of TV. She liked books about pioneers and cowboys and I looked forward every night to another chapter of outdoor adventure. Then she read the book of Robin Hood to me and I was bitten by the archery bug when I was only 6 years old. That early infatuation with the bow has consumed me my entire life.

My Mother took this picture of me when I was 2 years old. Most mothers I think would scream in horror if they saw their kid drinking from the dogs dish....not my mom she took my picture

She had my first shoes bronzed...remember those? That was just before I started growing my beard

My mom doesn't do outdoors and she always refuses to cook wild caught fish or game meat.  However she was always a sport and would take me to the woods when I was in my teens. I still remember being ready to go to the woods at 4 am and feeling bad about going in, waking her up and dragging her out of bed for a ride to the woods.

My mom died on February 1st 1981 of heart disease. 27 minutes of CPR before the ambulance arrived but knew when they took her away she had gone to be with her savior.
But the first 16 years of my life she encouraged my outdoors adventures.  Scaling and frying up tiny bluegill, cooking rabbit, grouse, groundhog and squirrel and always a hug of gratitude for helping her feed the 7 kids she raised.  She never hunted or fished but she would pick berries and can food, make preserves and help in the garden.  A tougher woman there never was and I wish she could have made it a few more years.  I may have turned out a bit better!

This brought back memories for me
My mom taught me to shoot we went to visit grandparents in Alabama his porch was full of guns. She took a .22 put bottle caps in a berm behind the house at about 40 maybe 50 yds. showed us how to hold the rifle iron peep sights and breathe and pull not jerk the trigger. I going no way we are going to hit bottle caps that far away. I missed my sisters missed My mom says watch this I will show you how she went real slow and hit proably ten in a row. I got the hang of it and still love target shooting to this day. I love shooting my bows too. She went to be with the other angels in 72
