Fun offseason hunt
« on: June 10, 2019, 02:31:47 PM »
I was looking for squirrels today while walking with my bow and before I left I spotted some larger prey. Using a cattle trailer to block my quarry's view I got within range and peeked out around my hide. The wary morsel was looking for danger, but in the wrong direction! I picked a spot and the arrow was gone, a good hit if a little low. After a quick struggle and finishing shot I had my reward... a groundhog! As I was hauling the hog home I spotted a squirrel and pinned it to a tree, I've been wanting to try out some a new grill with some game and I believe these will do nicely. ( I wanted to post a picture but failed to get the attachment working)

I’ve shot a lot of groundhogs but I always fed them to the vultures. How do they taste?

Squirrels are small game in Virginia and have designated hunting seasons. None are open now. Just my opinion but.....I wouldn't be bragging about killing them out of season on the internet unless you want a visit from a game warden.

Strangely enough we have a summer season in Ms and no one uses it. Might have something to do with 90 degrees  :biglaugh:

Ground hogs aren’t on the gulf coast. My Grandfather hunted them in North Alabama. Is the meat mediocre or more on the good side. They look meaty!

Heck yes it's good.  They live on clover, alfalfa and other tender greens.  Mild flavor and fairly tender.  They were a welcome addition to the table in my family when I was coming up.

Whistle pig is absolutely awesome table fair. My brother and I killed the seed of them within walking distance of our house as kids. Bows 22 shotgun sticks whatever we could dispatch one with. We always boiled them for a while skimming the grease off water then put in oven and roast with potatoes and carrots with some cream of mushroom soup in pan. Man I wish Florida had them. I’d take everyone I could get my hands on.

Ghostman, it took me 45 seconds to check the early squirrel seasons. You should've done the same before you blasted this guy.
