North Carolina folks I need ya
« on: March 11, 2021, 03:41:13 PM »
hope Terry is cool with this post but my main focus is hunting and 95% of that is with a stickbow so I'm thinking about moving down there in a few years and hoping I can pm some questions about where I should be looking at that are decent areas to hunt and fish or where to avoid being a hunter.

My wife and I have lived here in Brevard/Transylvania Co. NC in the southwestern Southern Appalachian Mountains for 30 years. Moved here from coastal GA/SC. Half of Transylvania Co is either National Forest or State Park with lots of gamelands all around. We have plenty of bears, a pretty good deer herd, lots of turkeys and elk just over the mountains at Cataloochee near Waynesville, NC. The Davidson River, coming out of the Pisgah National Forest is reported to be one of the 10 best trout waters in the country. The 7 headwater rivers of the French Broad River originate here in the county with trout, largemouth and smallmouth bass, all sorts of panfish and muskie up to about 40". Properties and houses are at premium prices here because of the small inventories but once you are here the cost of living is the same as elsewhere. We have become a bicycle mecca with both road and Mt biking. Whitewater is within an hour drive and this is a very beautiful place to live with 4 distinct seasons and many incredible vistas. We have the liberal arts 4 year Brevard College and a community college, 2 high schools, 2 Jr. high schools and 4 elementary schools along with a private Brevard Academy. The Brevard Music Center has world class performances every night during the summer and this is the home of The Steep Canyon Rangers and lots and lots of home grown music.  Brevard has about 7000 population and Trans Co has about 30,000.

Recently, I moved just over the border and about 1.5 hours north of Pat, having lived the last 20 years further east in Charlotte and Raleigh.  Fell free to message me and I’ll be happy help if I can.

in a nutshell me and my wife want to leave Mass soon my daughter is applying at colleges and we need to start settling down, might be a couple years but this will be the final move for us so I have to nail it this time there wont be another move unless its really bad.   not sure if I want to be really far out and secluded but I want to be close enough out where I can drive to decent hunting and fishing and the outdoors.  I'll be in touch soon thanks again.

Having hunted a good bit in VA, NC, SC and GA, plus having lived briefly in VA, twice in SC and currently living in NC, I can say with confidence that the hunting is far better in VA and GA than in NC or SC.  You might have your daughter look at colleges in VA and GA also, if you really want to be a resident where there are very good hunting opportunities.  If you are dead set on NC, and the good colleges here, then you should try to live as close to the VA border as possible and buy the NR licenses and tags.  Two of my kids went to college here in NC and one went to college in VA.

Jeff , Just curious since you have hunted in the 4 states you mentioned why do you feel the hunting is better in VA and GA ? I’m not disagreeing just curious as to that you feel the reasons are. One thing in SC that I don’t like is our short and hot Archery only season, if hunting public land it makes Archery hunting tough.

MCNSC, being that I grew up in GA, bowhunting and hot go together like chicken and dumplings. But is didn't stop us guys from killing lots of deer. That summer pattern here is strong during that time. We would hunt till 10am, and get back in the woods at 530 or 6.  I probably killed more deer in the evening during the week after work than the weekends.  Mid day can be sweltering, and unproductive for sure during those last 3 weeks in September, and even the 1st week in October.

Valid question MCNSC.  Let me count the ways:  in VA, the bear hunting opportunities for bowhunters are much better than in NC, at least until the dog hunters are unleashed.  Tons of bears on public lands up there, very good chance to arrow a bear in October.  Bear hunting with a bow in SC is a very low percentage affair, although still possible.  Until recently I had discounted bowhunting for bears in GA as a game of chance but Jerry Russell changed my mind on that, especially if you watch his YouTube videos!  In NC bowhunters don’t have much chance at a bear due to the baiting and dog hunters.  No hogs in VA so that is a negative, but I think the VA public lands are much better managed and have so much more game available than in either NC or SC.  Less hunters too, especially if you are willing to hike.  I think the GA public lands are also much better managed than NC and SC, and I hunt mostly public lands.  The hog hunting on public land in GA is awesome and CHEAP for a NR.  Of the 4 states I listed, I find the best deer hunting in VA, but again the deer hunting on public land in GA is pretty darn good too.  Finally, I have not hunted SC in a few years but I think that SC has that idiotic law that prevents the use of a bow for hogs in small game season on public land, right?  Oh yeah, forgot to mention: there is a fall archery season for turkeys in VA, and there are tons of turkeys in VA.

I don't know if it's the same now but when I lived in Bluffton, SC our hunting season started August 15. You can imaging August 15 is the river swamps of the SC low country. I always went on opening day but usually waited until mid Sept before I got serious. I've seen lots of nice deer killed on the opening day of the season down there.

Pat, I killed a buck on August 18 one year in the Francis Marion NF and it got up into the 90’s that day.  Uggggh!  Brought it home to process immediately and learned an important lesson when about 100 ticks abandoned the cooling body in my garage!  Wife was not impressed.....

Jeff, that's exactly why I gutted them and took them to the local processor.... as most of the guys I hunted with did for the very same reason.

The deer ticks didn't bother me but the seed ticks were terrible. Thank goodness for permanone but later on. We always butchered our deer at our club and packed the meat in coolers to take it home. We were doing Quality Deer Management so we pulled jaw bones for the state biologist and sometimes they wanted to inspect the visera too. Joe Hamilton, one of the founders of QDMA was our state biologist.

I grew up and still live in central Georgia. Hunting and fishing are very good, and we are a reasonably short drive to the mountains or the coast. This offers even more accessibility to good places to go. There is a lot of open public land as well as private land for sale. Not always cheap, though. There is entertainment and shopping at a reasonable distance as well. Yes, we got bugs, but permethrin handles the tick problem adequately. I'm not knocking any other locations you might consider since I don't them that well, just wanting to be sure you don't arbitrarily rule out middle Georgia. Heck, there are lots of places in the sunny South that have a lot to offer. Whichever state you choose, come on down!

Come on down, We left central NY almost 3 years ago for  north east Georgia!!  I’m not far from NC or SC and just south of the mountains. I haven’t got the hunting and fishing figured out yet the the opportunity is very good on all counts !
