Another option are the pack out bags.

I hunt with a back quiver so I don't want a backpack.  I can fold these down to fit in a cargo pocket or haversack.  Along with some light weight B.O.M.B meat bags.  My brother packed out a whole deer with one trip this way.  Really distributes the weight so you can carry a lot like a saddle bag.

Hope to try it out on elk this Sept.
