Idaho sold out of Non-resident elk tags.
« on: August 21, 2019, 11:12:41 AM »
Had an invite to hunt with some friends in Idaho. It was an OTC unit. Bought a plane ticket and had plans to purchase tag and license when I got over there. Yesterday, I decided to order over the phone. When I did the recording said that they were sold out of non res elk tags. I stayed on line to talk with a person and she confirmed 3 times they were sold out. Talk about being bummed out. Half of my party had not bought tags yet. Not sure what I will do but I guess cancel my flight.

Take care

Not to say it is or it isn't but this is a new trick by the anti hunting crowd. They buy up all the tags so hunters can't get them. In area's where there is a quota, they punch out kill tags to shut them down.

It's highly unlikely that the entire state is sold out, but some units do sell out fairly quickly.  In situations like this, everything revolves around getting a tag.  I check the date when the tags become available, and the first thing I do is buy the tag.  Then I plan the rest of the hunt.  Not hunting Idaho this year, but that has worked for me the few years previous. And I was hunting a unit that sold out.

Damn.    I have hunted ID many times and never worried about this before.  Heck never knew there was a limit.  In fact, ID was kinda my "fallback hunt" locale as is, if I could not draw a tag someplace else, I would just pick an OTC tag in ID and go there.

Thanks for the info and sorry about your hunt.

I am part of the problem as an Idaho resident. I just got off a river trip and went in to buy a "left over " nonresident tag only to find that they sold out on 08/16/19. They have never sold out that early before. Just a few years ago you could still buy one in October. I'm not sure what has happened. BUT I do want to remind all you coming from afar that there hasn't been an elk sighted in Idaho since WOLVES were introduced. F&G must be lying that most of our herds are meeting or exceeding objectives. Best to hunt Colorado my friends!  :bigsmyl:

Idaho Fish & Game just posted on Face Book that  any deer and elk tags not drawn in the second controlled hunt draw(which just ended today) will be available August 26,2019 at 10;00 am, first-come, first-served. I don't know much else about it but you may want to get on their web site and check again.

I too have been affected by this, tags went on sale in December... no fault but my own.

I have a theory on the sell out, social media certainly isn't innocent in this, but I believe it has much to do with the amount of bow hunters in Colorado. Most folks I talk to that hunt in CO are fed up with the amount of other hunters they are running into in the field.

the road to becoming a bowhunter is much easier these days... I'm afraid of what the future holds if we continue down this road...

on aug 15 every year all nonres elk and deer tags go on sale to res...last year they sold out just a quick...

yes a few years ago fish and game reduced the price by a 100 bucks for us res so we would buy nr tags...
(they need the money) not so the last few years as they have been selling out quickly...there are no more elk now than there were 5 years ago but there sure are a lot more hunters in the woods

so buy ur tags BEFORE AUG 15 and u won't have this happen

hope this helps  :bigsmyl:

I am from out of state and lucky enough to have an Idaho tag this year. I can understand the frustration from the resident's perspective as well as the capped tags for NR. The biggest problem I have is not paying the money as an out of state resident, our deer tags in Illinois are nuts. The overcrowding issue whether you're in state or out of state is the real problem in my opinion. This will be my 1st foray into Idaho. I have hunted Colorado and Wyoming. The last trip to Colorado was crowded to say the least.
