Ready to roll...
« on: September 18, 2019, 05:09:46 PM »
Season in Oklahoma starts the first week of October. As long as it is under 90 degrees and the mosquitoes don't carry me off... I am good to go.

I’ve got the first 5 days off and plan to spend those first 4 out as hardcore as I can! I’m sure I’ll be eaten alive by the skeeters considering every place I’m gonna go to is within feet of the lake. Seen a couple nice bucks on the public lands next to the house, but I’m not gonna be picky.

Soonerlongbow-

They keep promising a cool down but it hasn't in my part of the country yet. Are you in the east of the state?

Maybe the rain this weekend will mellow out the temps a little.

Grew up just outside MACAAP but I’ve lived in the opposite corner for the last 15yrs. Right now we live on Waurika lake. But I guess the years of working on a frac spread, wearing FR coveralls and 16 massive screaming diesel engines has me thinking 90 ain’t so bad. So long as I can get out of the direct sun and there’s a decent breeze at least.

That's nice country up there. Being from down McAlester way... you definitly know what a "good" deer looks like!

Worked for years on Ft. Sill too, they’ve got many that put a lot of the McAlester deer to shame! As an Army MP & Civ police I saw deer that couldn’t fit their head through the window of my patrol car if they tried. Not to mention they have elk! I fell asleep on my only elk hunt there, woke up to fresh tracks 8’ in front of me. Followed them for 400yds and could hear them 75-100yds from me but never saw them. They crossed my footprint from entry.

Holy Bull Elk, Batman!

I am 51 and have put in for the Wichita Mountains NWR elk hunt since I was sixteen! One of these days I will draw a tag. I was lucky enough to draw an Antelope tag back in 2000 (just before they changed the rules and made it a "once in a life time" hunt) and put in for it every year as well.

The new archery only OTC Antelope tags are a great opportunity. I just have a hard time breaking away from work the first two weeks of October. One of these days! I think you can count on one hand the number of Oklahoma hunters that have killed an Antelope with traditional archery gear.

The weather seems to have turned survivable for the weekend. Overcast and some rain today. I might be able to get a few hours of practice in without risking heat stroke.

Ten days and counting to bow season.

That was a bad move in my opinion, on the part of ODWC. Especially with the numbers rising for both elk and pronghorns.

Well, the odds for getting drawn in to the elk hunt are still several thousand to one. I don't think they will run out of folks to apply for a while. I believe it was in response to some folks who didn't get drawn in 50 or 60 years that knew hunters who were drawn twice in less than ten. It is totally random and those instances were just luck but the "optics" were hard for ODWC to manage.

I'm off for the first 9 days & hope to be chasing bears down around the scenic byway. I can hardly wait! This time of year is definitely my favorite! I'm always so much more full of hope & anticipation for what's to come during the season ahead...... Maybe THIS will be the year that I get my first kill with a bow.... Maybe THIS will be the year that I finally connect on a bear...... Maybe THIS year will be the year that...... :bigsmyl: :archer2: :archer:

Well fellow Oklahomans...

Our state's weather never fails to impress! After a rain filled weekend where temps were expected to be mild we have a Monday that has brought us an 86* day with a "feels like" temp of (wait for it)... 96*! In my county we are at a relative humidity of over 70%. Those hardy souls in our southeastern most counties are enjoying a pour-cleansing 92-95% humidity with temps in the low 90s. That's enough to get mold growing on the bottom of your sneakers.

Good luck to everyone headed out on October 1... be safe, have fun... take a rag to wipe the sweat off.
