Covering a bow quiver hood
« on: October 14, 2019, 04:30:14 AM »
Hi, This is the first time in a while that I have used this forum so I hope, that I'm posting this in the right place
A friend of mine has a bow quiver hood that he wants to cover with a piece of beaver tail leather that he received when he bought a bow.
I have spoken to upholstery contractors but they have no idea how to cut it to the correct form
Does anyone know how it could be done - any helpful ideas or tips
I though about soaking it in water to soften it and then trying to draw it over the hood and gluing it in place but if it doesn't work, the leather could be ruined
Thanks

Big Jim has a U tube vid on putting them on a bow drip. He applies several coats of contact cement and dries between coats. You need to watch it. I think the principle would be the same.

I think I would cut a pattern to fit out of heavy paper.  Once I got the pattern correct transfer it to the beavertail.

I would imagine it would be pretty tough to do without cutting slits in the hide. A bow grip is one thing because it's fairly cylindrical and can be wrapped around. A bow hood quiver would be more like wrapping it over a ball, so you would have some parts laying flat and then other areas sticking out. At least that's how I'm visualizing it.

He will need a template, as has already been suggested.  Also, will likely need to cut and sew the hide in places, the sides of the quiver hood, for example.  Look at a Selway quiver for an example.

It is quite easy to do once you have the pattern.  I've done a number of them for the kwikee kwivers.

I don’t think beaver is generally big enough for many hoods. Maybe some little ones
