Deer camp
« on: October 31, 2019, 12:50:06 PM »
I'm on vacation this week for deer hunting.
I solo hunt now days because everyone's gone that I hunted with.
I stay at home now days to hunt and it's just not the same.
And today I'm taking a day off from hunting to give myself a break.
My wife asked me if I would like some bacon and eggs and she fired up her old copper bottom percolator.
Sitting in my recliner, I started smelling bacon and then the pop, pop of that percolator......
Then there goes the the memories.
Deer camp, waking up to the smells of breakfast and the sound of the percolator.
Those were the days. :archer:

Ain't that the truth...
Deer camp is one of those special times you are cold, wet, miserable, tired, fatigued, and can't wait to get home. Until you get home.
Then you spend the rest of the year dreaming about going back. :campfire:

There is something to be said for simpler times and all the good memories.
My two oldest friends are in their 70s.  One only hunts once a year during the Missouri rifle season and the other seldom since he broke his back and pelvis falling from a stand two seasons ago.
Back 15 to 20 years we had a decent lease with nothing but good friends on it.  An open air kitchen set up.  Ronnie did of the cooking when he was in camp and he never had to clean a deer because Preston and I were grateful for his good meals.
Those days are gone but I still love those guys and God could not have given me better mentors or friends.
Life moves on and we have a great ranch house and the friends are 18 years my junior so now it's my turn to have patience and mentor them.   I thank God for them as well as the people of the past.
Old memories are great but I look forward to creating new ones as I go.  Not just for me but for those I'll leave behind.

I miss it. I took my son and his buddies for years. A couple of other Dads went now and then. Great times. My son and I talked about getting things around to go next year. Hopefully. We spent a lot of time in the Pigeon River Country years ago. Maybe next year we’ll go back. I used to make large quantities of biscuits and gravy up ahead. Those boys could eat.

Headed to camp next week.  We sprinkle in some weekends now and then but to be at camp for an extended period with good friends is it for me.  I enjoy the time success or not.  At our camp no electricity or water so it's back to the basics which makes it all the better!
A lot of time is spent around the campfire with a touch of whiskey, some hand carved tobacco pipes that were from my friend Dire Wolf and some warm dutch oven cobbler.  That sounds about perfect huh?  (and a deer or two hanging is always a plus)
Hoping all of you have success in the coming weeks!

Our deer camp will get together next week. We used to have it on opening weekend, but as we are considerably older now, we need to wait till it cools off a bit. It is always a great time. I've going to the same camp since 1974.

I belonged to a camp in the Adirondacks since 1978, started hunting there in 71’. When I moved to Georgia last year I turned in my keys and resigned my membership. I miss the thought of going but it’s not the same, everyone is getting old and the desire to hunt is not what it was. I hunt alone now, and with new areas it is a bit overwhelming.  But I will make the best of it. I will think of the mountains often and keep those memories close to my heart.

Deer camp will always have a special place in my heart. I prefer archery camp with my brothers more than gun camp these days. Less crowded and better mindset.

Pop (grandpa) had a camp years ago, we used to go back to the cabin in the summer to fish the lake he made by daming up the stream.  Never hunting there, he sold the land, before I was old enough to hunt in PA.  Uncles and cousins used to come stay at our house, then hunt state land around us.  Really, enjoyed the hunts.  All rifle hunting in those days.  Took up bowhunting 38 years ago.  Really, never had anyone to hunt with.  Miss those nights sitting around the fireplace after a days hunt with the relatives.  Closest I have is the TBH Granger Xtreme Hog Hunt, and I'm the old man, that still shoots a longbow!

Same here guys. Since moving to New York these last few years, I don't know any traditional archers or smokepole enthusiasts anywhere. I time the shooting hours back in Indiana and call friends and family each day as soon as I know they are home from the evening stand back there so we can talk deer hunting: who saw what, what's wrong with this setup, why we aren't seeing deer, how many scrapes we found, etc; but I don't know anyone out here who hunts the way I do.

I do my camps up here alone, but I am a backpack hunter in the Catskills, so I would probably be doing that alone anyway (always have been a bit of a diehard).

Deer camp for was Ma and Dad's place. We all got there early and Ma always had the coffee done and was waiting to see who showed up  for breakfast. We would have breakfast then drive to Grandmothers to hunt. Not your traditional deer camp but it worked for us.

Don't hike in to Granger any more.  Kayak down the San Gabriel to camp, gives me a bit more flexibility as to where I hunt.  Easier to get farther up or down stream with a yak than on foot.  Also, can hunt both sides of the river easier.

Ohh man, wud. I owned two kayaks back when I lived in Indiana. I've done most stretches of the patoka river clear from dubois county to the Wabash at Gibson (not in one trip). In the summer time you see deer bedded right on the bank.
