Fill-in locator to straight grip
« on: January 19, 2020, 10:46:48 PM »
I have an ASL with a locator style grip. Love the bow, not the grip.  I would like to fill the grip’s void in to make a straight grip.  Any ideas on what to use?
Have thought of using an epoxy or car body bondo stuff then sanding down.  Any thoughts? Good or bad?  Thanks.

Bondo.  Then shape it.  You can hide it with a leather wrap.

The hall mark of a good body and fender man is to use as little Bondo as possible since it cracks.  I would suggest that you purchase the Bondo that has chopped fiberglass mixed in since it resists cracking.  No guarantee on it not failing but it wouldn’t hurt.

Contact cement and cork gasket material. Was real easy to smooth out. Has just enough give to be really comfortable to carry and shoot.

Used Bondo before on used Asl`s that were buthered. But I prefer to grind down the handle on a drum sander, laminate wood and reshape the grip.

JB Weld makes some epoxy putties that work really well for modifying grips (and fixing divots in forms...) Their KwikWood is usually available at local home centers and is the jelly roll style putty where you cut off a little, mix thoroughly by kneading with your fingers, then apply and let cure. Doesn't seem to shrink or crack or make as much of a mess as Bondo, but does take a little longer to set up.
