cant and no cant arrow flight
« on: May 16, 2020, 10:59:41 PM »
I think I've answered my own question, but I'm rusty being removed from my recurve for nearly 8 years.  I recently purchased a new string for my Bear Kodiak Magnum and began tuning arrows.  My bow is 55# at 28 and obviously the Kodiak Magnum is a 52" bow.  While tuning my arrows I would shoot perpendicular to the ground or straight up and down.  I would observe perfect arrow flight with my tuned arrows.  I then would cant the bow to about a 45 degree angle and experience arrow flight knock high and right slightly at a 3 oclock index.  Almost as though I have knock high issues more so then a stiff arrow shaft.  Am I torquing the bow string by not adjusting my body enough with the canted bow?  I experimented last night with canting the bow at more of a 60+ degree angle causing my body to also adjust and obtained perfect arrow flight.  I know I have a solution...well two solutions shoot more cant or straight up and down....the learner in me wants to know why at 45 I'm having issues.  Fletched arrows seem to fly just fine at 45 as well.  Side note shoot three under.  Thanks for any insight.

I'm going to guess it has something to do with your hand placement in relation to your head/face.
Your drawing hand is getting torque pressure on the string. Like more so your ring finger.
Also you could be getting more heal pressure with your bow hand. That can move an arrow impact quite a bit.

From your post, I surmise that you were not adjusting your body cant to match your bow cant at 45*, but were adjusting your body cant at 60*. You should adjust your body cant to match your bow cant at any but very small degrees of cant, and 45* is a significant amount of cant.

At first I thought you were not allowing for your cant in evaluating nock high, but on second reading I believe you were taking this correctly into account.  In other words, you were interpreting a nock high right bare shaft at a 45* cant as being the equivalent of a nock high bare shaft with the bow held vertically?

McDave yes that's correct. I didn't explain it very clearly. When shot vertically though I'm having exceptional arrow flight. Pine I'm discovering heal pressure and the affects therein. Thanks fellas for the insight!
