arrow selection help
« on: April 27, 2020, 10:00:17 PM »
I just bought a Zipper carbon Nitro longbow, trying to decide on arrow spine. The bow is 45@28 and I draw 29. I was thinking of using a 125 gr head and a 100gr insert. Does a 400 spine carbon cut to about 30 1/2 sound like a good starting point or am I way off ? Don't want to go with a real heavy arrow, 10gpp would suffice for any hunting that I do. Thanks in advance, Gary

I'm not familiar if that bow is cut past center or not, but I would be more inclined to believe you are in 500 spine territory firmly.

Hey big Jim, the bow is cut 3/16 past center. Guess I'll order a couple 500 and give her a go

It must be a 3 piece longbow to be cut so deep.

Here's the thing... 500's are the right spine for that if you are drawing 28"s or more. Being cut so deep will allow you to move the side plate out toward the arrow if the spine ends up on the weak side... it won't.
400's, generally are better suited for bows above 53 actually drawn lbs.

If your bow is truly cut 3/16" past center, you could likely shoot a 400, but because of the energy put forth by the bow, but because it is closer to center and won't have to flex as much. However, if that arrow is too stiff, the only recourse is to weigh down the point even more and likely leave it full length.
good luck, BigJIm

BigJim, are you making your suggestion assuming I use 225 up front with the 500 spine or stay with a standard aluminum insert ? Gary

With a guy shooting a 50 lb bow, my standard suggestion is for them to use a 500 spine with 200 +- grains up front for hunting weight arrows. A few grains won't make a big difference unless your arrow isn't tuned properly.
200 up front is not a lot of weight for 50 lbs. 225 is nearly the same.

With 3/16" cut past center, it may very well be that you can get a couple of spines to look ok, but one will be better than the other.

500 spine it is with 225 up front. Still have that darned nock high issue!!! Gonna keep working at it. Think part of the problem is after many shoulder surgeries i can't move my shoulder down enough when at full draw

Gary, give 500 a try like Jim suggests. Let me know how it works out for you.

Depending on the bow I shoot a 500 spine with 225 up front +/- on point weight when it's in the 45 lb range.
Relax,

You'll live longer!
