Starting kids
« on: May 27, 2020, 09:11:25 AM »
Spring is leaving us and so is corona. Sure many are taking kids out for the first time. Here’s some things in case someone isn’t aware to help.
One check dominant eye. Get the correct bow. It’ll be way safer n easier.
Think about and teach form. Best way is string bow. If you’re not sure how to make one, ask. Do not shortcut here. Teach stance, grip(you don’t need arm guards if done correctly), elbow, shoulder position, back tension somewhat (beginners won’t understand the concept, I push on the elbow and tell them to imagine it’s a kid on the school bus, now push him back). Release, it’s important. No dead hand or hands flying all over.
Once form is good begin w bow. No targets. They’ll aim and we want focus on form. Once that’s done we can introduce targets. Just shoot at em, doesn’t matter where arrows hit. If inconsistencies start work on string bow.
If the child is shooting decently we can start w into active type targets. A cool one is balloons, they break. Now surprise em w putting powder or corn starch in one. They “blow up”.
I’ve written fairly short about the steps. If anyone needs help you could contact me. Starting them right is way easier than fixing issues.
Two more things. Upon anchor kids wanna put thumb in way. Teach Boy Scout salute or tell them touch pinky to thumb to make pocket.
Next is to stop peeking, upon release, last step in reaiming. The hand might move a little w shot but we want their mind to stay there (follow through). Aiming last tricks em into that. If they forget remind them and build memory by doing so even if after the fact.
Hope that’s clear enough. We all didn’t learn properly. Grandpa wasn’t an archery instructor. Help our kids do better.
Good luck

Good overview. It covers a lot of material. I think the powder in the balloon is a great  idea. Heck, I'll enjoy that! The only issue I have is attention span. My grandson is ADHD, so our sessions are short. This is good advice, but I have to be cautious to keep it fun and short.

Baby steps than. One trick for filling a balloon is put powder in a small pill bottle. Put balloon over top, tap some powder in. You don’t need much. Than pull off n blow up.
