.003 to .004 taper
« on: June 16, 2020, 04:05:54 PM »
I am not totally happy with the bend in the limbs of my new bow design...  I am thinking about going from a .003 taper to a .004 taper...  I have only used a .003 taper in the last 3 to 4 years...  It seams to work good in the R/D bows that I have been making...  Now that I have gone to this recurve / lever design with a little more reflex in the working area I feel that I may need to go to the .004 taper...

My question is:   In your opinion when you go from a .003 to a .004 taper is it a radical change or very subtle change in the way the limb bends??

I figure I would ask and get some opinions before I try it....

If you’re worried about it being to much just leave the limb profile wider than your normal a make the limb bend where you want it by adjusting limb profile. I thought your recurve was bending great as is though

.004 will make it stack a bit sooner. But less mass weight may be more performance.
What don't you like about your bend.

Thanks for the input...  I think a small little tweak may buy me a few more fps...  You would be surprised at the little tweaks I make and gain 2- 3 fps sometimes...  If you were to look at the two sets of limbs it would be hard to tell the difference unless you mapped out the limbs on paper and compared them...

Stic...   the bend is good...  But I think it can be better...  I don't like to settle on a design unless every stone is turned over...

Well I decided to take the easy way out and just change my hyper lam...  By rights I should have went to a .004 taper but then I would have to start from scratch and design and make a whole new hyper lam and that could take multiple tries to get it right...  Maybe down the line I will change to a .004 taper...  I believe I did pick up another 1 to 3 fps...  Right now it is shooting the same speed as the bow made before it but I still have to sand about another 1/8" width off the width of the limbs, mostly on the last third of the limbs...  Removing that amount of stock will bring the speed up...  Also the numbers are a little better on the DFC...  When you understand how to work with the DFC the numbers don't lie...  I almost always go with the better numbers on the DFC...

Here are two pics....  Before and after the modified hyper lam...  See if you can see the difference in the bend...

  * Just a note...  The bow is not tiller properly yet...  Which could possibly bring the performance up a hair more...

Looks like the arc is a little wider in the second pic and the tips opened up a little more.

So I’m guessing you thinned down the tip wedge portion.
