Feather to nose psychotrigger?
« on: April 20, 2020, 08:41:51 PM »
Who uses this versus a draw clicker and how did you progress with it?  I HATED feather to nose at first but it’s slowly getting a tiny bit easier every day. I do think Im a bit more accurate with a pull through trigger so I thought Id try this.

Ive tried this.  It works good for me at first, but always ends w me going to get the feather w my head leading to serious deterioration of my form.  I find i shoot best without a psychotrigger of any kind.

I am shooting a really fun psycho trigger these days, thanks to a recent Joel Turner/Push archery podcast.

I can put my tongue to the roof of my mouth with my lips sealed, and by building pressure with the tongue, make a variety of grunts/squeaking noises. no inhalation, just tongue/jaw movement. That's the basis for my trigger. This is all something I've been experimenting with for a couple weeks now, btw.

Anyways, I draw, get good alignment, aim, then form the pressure pocket with my tongue that will become a little mouth grunt. After that all I have to do is focus on expanding by increasing back tension. The tension in your back bleeds into your neck and jaw muscles just a little bit,and it's enough to pop the seal on that pressure pocket. So I basically have a pressure driven clicker that's non mechanical.

It took me a week to find the right tongue position, and it requires good form. If I drop my head and reach for the string it clamps down my jaw, and makes the pop almost impossible to trigger.

I have a 5 point anchor now and hold at full draw until I am lined up for the shot. I start back tension as I am ready to release and time the release where I feel everything is lined up for the shot. My aim is my release timer and the 5 point anchor lets me know I am at the same full draw.

My 3-under fixed crawl allows me to anchor and hold with the cock feather touching my nose. It has helped me become more accurate and consistent.

That's interesting.  I can touch the feather to my nose when I’m not using a fixed crawl, but when I am using the fixed crawl, the feather is above the tip of my nose, closer to my eye.  That kept me away from using a fixed crawl for a while, until I decided the advantages of a fixed crawl outweighed the advantages of the feather touching the tip of my nose.  I even asked questions on here, and was told that with a fixed crawl I wouldn't be able to use a nose anchor.  Do you also use feather to nose when you're not using a fixed crawl?  I wonder how you can do both?

I only use a fixed crawl, so the feather to nose anchor works for all 3 of my bows.

McDave - I actually find that shooting from somewhere down the string helps with feather touches on the nose for anchoring or triggering my shots. Depending on the game I'm playing or the hunt I am preparing for, I will custom fletch my arrows for a specific purpose.

So lets say I am competing indoor - 20 yards. Typically my crawl will be pretty large. So those arrows for that game will have the feathers / vanes fletched way back on the shaft, close to the nock. I experiment by fletching one arrow with the feathers right up to the end of the carbon near the nock. I then slowly trim the feather forward until it is at that sweet spot to touch my nose when I want it to in my expansion. So in that example, the feather would be touching about midway up the bridge of my nose.

On the other end of the spectrum, the 50 meter target game requires a very small crawl for my rig. Its only about 1/8"-1/4" down from the nock. So I do the same process of finding where i need to fletch those arrows. Since the arrow is lower in relation to my face, the feathers / vanes are usually pretty far away from the nock compared to my 20 yard indoor arrows. But the touch to my nose will happen near the tip of my nose for my 50 meter arrows.

For hunting my crawls are usually a mid-range crawl with the heavy arrows, so a normal feather placement usually gets a feather touch just fine.

Another hot tip: if you're a stringwalker and dynamically crawl for each distance, I've fletched arrows with their vanes / feathers 1/8" difference from eachother down the shaft. So essentially I'd have 3 or 4 options to choose from depending on the crawl. I'd just rotate my arrow and choose the "red" feather to be in the cock feather position which would give me a good touch for my 20 yard crawl. For 30 yard crawl, I'd rotate the "white" feather into the cock position to give me a good touch from that crawl.

Fun stuff!

Great idea!  Never thought of that.  The only time I would use a fixed crawl is for hunting, and on my hunting bow I would never use anything other than a fixed crawl, so there is no reason I couldn't fletch the arrows for that bow so the cock feather would contact a spot higher up on my nose and then I could still use my feather to nose anchor!  I can imagine that a possible side benefit would be if in the excitement of some moment I forgot to grab the string at the crawl point, the feather would hit my nose too soon, and might tip me off to the error before I shot the arrow.

New to tradgang. First post but been flinging sticks since the 1960's. I use split finger with the RING finger at the corner of my mouth, the tip of the index against the nostril bump of my nose which puts the arrow DIRECTLY under my pupil. I draw slightly further which allows the 5 inch shield feather to touch my nose. Iam also checking elevation at the same time. Since I use a deep hook I feel no need to release until it is all lined up. I use a static release(when I am not being sloppy). Literally 10 minutes ago I put an arrow within an inch of a. 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch piece of blue tape on my foam target at 30 yards. With my self-made double tab I get a really smooth release. In fact, the more I use it the smoother it's gotten. Because of this anchor system, along with pulling, anchoring, and then letting down several times each week, I have beaten target panic as well.
