Cresting prep?
« on: August 20, 2020, 11:40:22 PM »
What if any shaft prep is needed for wood arrows prior to cresting?

I always put a sealer on wood shafts after staining and before capping and cresting. Clear sealer after to keep paint from smearing.

So one coat of polyacrylic and then crest, finish with couple more coats of sealant should do the trick. (?)

I was also thinking about a Krylon primer then cresting.

2 coats polyurethane, allow to dry well, lightly buff the area with 3/0 steel wool, crest, let dry well, 2 more coats poly. Allow to cure well. I like 3-4 days to cure before shooting. As you might guess, I believe they key to a good job is allowing things to dry well before working them again.

Exactly. I use clear water based poly.

Wood shafts, I used MinWax polyethylene thinned down a little so it would penetrate better. Then I crested. Then a couple more dips of the poly to seal. I usually wait 24 hours between process. If it’s humid longer.

I’m having great luck putting on three coats of Daly’s Pro Fin before cresting.
