Id this tree please?
« on: August 28, 2020, 01:14:01 PM »
This leaf is from a young tree growing in my yard. I’m going to have to cut it because it’s growing in a bad spot. I think it’s a white mulberry. Any ideas?

I'm guessing his friends call him Fred.  :dunno:

I'm not sure about the white part, but yes a mulberry.

You can call him Fred, but I’ll be calling him dead. It’s growing right up against the fence. It’s too bad. If there was room I’d let it grow.

Too bad it only has a short main trunk. It forked about 20 inches above the ground or I would leave it another  year or so before cutting it down for bow wood. Isn’t mulberry good for selfbows?

It is a mulberry and mulberry is an excellent selfbow wood. My best guess is white or common mulberry, Morus alba.
If you wait until it goes dormant this winter you can dig it and transplant it to a more appropriate spot.
I guess great minds think alike.

Real hard to do where I live. Our house sits on land that was a gravel pit. There’s nothing but rocks, boulders and clay under us. Most fence installers refuse to work here. Once a tree is three or more years old it’s roots are near impossible to get at.

I have to cleanup the area that it’s growing in so I’ll try and get it out whole. It will be a trick though. It’s partly under the fence.
