New law coming to Iowa

HF 657 / HF 2455 – Leashed Dog Tracking - The bill allows a hunter to use a dog to track and retrieve wounded deer as long as the dog is leashed with a maximum of a 50-foot lead during certain times on public land. A hunter can do this on private land at any time with the landowner permission. The dog and hunter must be trained in blood tracking.  They may not kill a deer outside legal hunting hours.

Should you shoot a deer and can't find it give one of us a call. Try to call the handler that lives closet to the lost deer first, this should help reduce the time your deer is laying in the woods. You will be asked a series of questions by the handler and if he/she feels there is a chance to recover your deer you can make arrangements to meet the handler, the dog, and blood track your lost deer. The handler may turn down your request if he/she feels the deer is not recoverable from the details of your phone conversation.

This is a volunteer service, although we do accept donations to help defray the costs of fuel, auto etc. Current NJ law does not allow for the use of dogs during the hunting of deer in any form. The 10 people listed on Permit 131 are the ONLY people allowed to use dogs to find wounded deer in the state of NJ.

I’ve hunted with people who had blood tracking dogs. Can’t say enough good things about them. Should be legal everywhere. The worst feeling in hunting is to shoot something and not be able to find the animal.

One of my hunters hit a 10" drop tine buck extremely hi. Footage clearly showed an extreme hi mark....only tissue and fat on the arrow...no blood...wished to attempt to have some verification that the was likely not mortally wounded...Hank displayed that there was no pheramone to track...cell cam batteries died that night....will replace tomorrow.

First and foremost ,I am all for tracking dogs for deer recovery and under the control of the owner, leash and tracking collar. But what I don't understand is that people just let their coyote dogs run here without any form of control. And me as a owner of livestock has had my share of issues with dogs harassing my cattle and horses. Dogs can be a very useful tool for a successful hunt, if used properly and under controlled circumstances. Dogs can't read "no trespassing" signs so I blame the dogs owners when I occasionally have a run in with one.

Pa. also allows dogs to track wounded deer. I believe the trackers have to be registered and dogs must be leashed.

I totally agree, should be legal everywhere. Anything that helps recover an animal is OK by me.
