Elevated rest
« on: September 11, 2020, 05:08:00 PM »
Anyone ever had any trouble getting an elevated rest to stay seated! I have a striker sport longbow and I can’t seem to get the rest to stay put. It’s the angle of the shelf but I can find anything to help it. I would shoot off the shelf but I can’t get rid of my nick high problem! Any solutions?

Are you having trouble getting the arrow to stay on the rest, or the rest to stay on the bow?

Is it a rest that is held on by adhesive, and the adhesive won’t stick?

If it’s a stick on get a roll of 3M tape for outdoor use. Clean the tape off the rest, clean the bow and reapply. I had a similar issue when I moved here. The summer heat turned the tapes glue to goo and the rest would slip down the sight window.
Gorilla Glue makes a similar tape that works as well. Oh, I used DNA to clean up the old tape glue.

When I first started shooting I didn't even know you could shoot off the shelf :biglaugh: I always had stick on rest. I would clean the side plate really well, and make sure the rest was newer so the adhesive was still good, and never had a problem.

I guess super glue would work as others have said, but you might want to try barge cement or a new rest. Is your sight widow flat or sort of contoured?

E6000 is a good all purpose glue too. When you are cleaning a spot for things to stick on, use something like 99.9% isopropyl alcohol (dry gas) or denatured alcohol on things with a finish like bows. I use acetone on things like aluminum arrows etc. Don't use rubbing alcohol, it has small amounts of oils in it.

That’s for the advise! I have to cut the rest down because of how small the area is but it is very contoured! I’m going to try cleaning it better and getting some of that 3m or gorilla tape first and if that doesn’t work I have some glue I will try. If I could get rid of my nock high problem I would prefer to shoot off the shelf but I believe this will help with because of the tiller.

Keep in mind that whatever glue you use should be removable, as the rest will probably break at some point or you will want to change it for something else.  An alternative would be to build up the shelf with layers of full grain leather until it reaches the same height as your stick on rest.

You didn’t mention the type rest you are using, some are stiff and won’t conform to the contour of the sight window. The Bear Weatherrest is pretty flexible, the last ones I bought seemed to be even softer than previous ones.

I’ve tried the Hoyt, omp, and bear weather rest. All do the same thing. I currently have a rest built up but I may try to build up higher before going back to the rest. Unless anyone knows of a way to get a high nock from a bareshaft out. I’ve tried all the way up to an inch down to 3/8 on the nock point. Tried it with the brace height from 7 1/4 to 8 inches. Maybe my arrow is too weak. 400 spine full length with 350 up front. Running wraps and 4 in aae trad vanes. shooting 47 lbs at 29. Bows cut 1/8 in past center. Shooting 3 under.

While I am pretty good at bare shaft tuning, and normally am able to get the tune I want, there have been times I have been unable to get rid of a persistent nock high.  One option is just don't worry about it.  As long as you're sure that the nock high is a true nock high and not a result of deflection of the shaft off the rest, it really doesn't hurt anything.  The last time I had that condition, I tried everything until I was pulling my hair out, and finally happened to try a bare shaft of a different brand, and the nock high went away.  I really have no idea why that worked.

Thank you I’ll try this last thing and if it doesn’t work I’ll just try to get it to the point where it’s not as bad cause the nock is super high. Thanks for all the advise folks!

For what it's worth;
When I bare shaft, I use one that I've built up the area where the fletching was with glue to maintain the weight and balance.  Removing my fletching reduces the weight by about 15 grains.

Possible option for the rest (kind of extreme) might be to drill and install an insert to use an adjustable arrow plate to put the rest on.

I guess I ought to put it in perspective. When I said you could  “just live with it” I meant if you could get the nock high less than about 10 degrees. If it’s more than 10 degrees, then that would be more than I would be willing to live with.

Couldn’t get it out with the built up rest. Threw the bear rest back on with some adhesive I warmed up with a lighter and that puppy is sticking now. First arrow shot was nock low :notworthy:. I realized I was getting a false weak arrow read as well. Shooting bareshafts out to 30 now and Broadhead are flying true! But thanks all for the input!
