I am looking to start my first ILF setup but I have no idea where to start. What are good risers and limbs. Are there things i should stray away from. Looking for a metal riser and want to stay below 500 dollars if possible. Any help appreciated.

If you would state how much you are looking to spend, wood or metal riser that would help guys give you some options. Lots of good ILF stuff out there that is very reasonable price wise.

I just got my first one a while back. I got a Timberhawk riser and Dryad limbs. I like it quite a bit.

Lots of good risers and limbs out there.  Hard to miss.  I started my ILF journey a while back and the mistake I made was doing it all on my own.  I didn’t know anyone that shot ILF and No one around me does now.  I had to learn how to set it up and how to tune it all by myself.  Many times the people I asked about it just said, “I don’t know”.  My advice is pick a sponsor on here and get your set up and get advice from them.  Or find someone near you that shoots ILF and get some help from them.  Now that I’ve got mine set up like I want, I don’t think I’ll ever go back.  Except I do have a Black Widow PCH that I will never get rid of.  :biglaugh:

My first ILF was a old compound bow riser converted to ILF. That’s called a Warf. Then a Hoyt Excel riser my son bought me. Now I have a couple metal risers and on wood. Yes, they are my fun bows. I have different length risers and limbs and the beauty of switching them around at my wim. As for setup most of the risers are meant to be shot from an elevated rest. Now the Hoyt Satori can be done off the shelf with the kit that comes with it. Agian more options.
Your goal for the bow, target, 3D, hunting, or all the above should help you decide how you want to setup the bow. Hunting is the easiest, no organization rules to follow.

Wood ILF risers each has a different grip.shape depending on the maker.
A metal.riser offers the option of different grips.
But not as pretty.
I have a Morrison that I fitted with a wood TradTech high grip.  Screw holes were off just a tiny bit so I had to enlarge them to fit.

??? for tree stand hunting, 3D, or back yard targets ???   What you wish to do with it will determine what riser length you should start with..... A 15" - 17" riser will make a shorter, lighter bow for stand hunting, but be harder to shoot as a target bow. A 25" - 27" riser will be heavier, longer, and more stable as a back yard target bow, and might be a detriment in a tree stand.  19" - 21"  risers are a good compromise for general purpose bows. I like a 19" for recurve limbs, and a 15" for longbow limbs.(Opinion and experience)

On a first setup, spend all your money on the best riser you can afford, and an inexpensive set of limbs.....The riser is the core of a quality setup, and limbs are an accessory you can upgrade as your skill set improves.

3Rivers Das risers with ILF limb pads are some of the best on the market..... I would start there, and use them as your standard to compare everything else too. (Opinion and experience)

I'm using a Samick discovery riser with DAS Bamboo Longbow limbs. If you find a pair of ILF longbow limbs that give you more value at 160.00 I'll be shocked. ILF does not need to be a bank account killer. The Limbs by DAS are excellent and they will allow you to spend a little more on the riser of your choice. I went with Samick because the price I got across the pond was again great value.
