Shooting Footed Carbons
« on: April 20, 2008, 11:21:00 PM »
My standard arrows are cut 3/4 of an inch over my draw length. I'm building some matched stumpers with 1&1/2 inch brass inserts and I'm thinking of using 1&1/2 inch aluminum footings to match the brss insert length. However, this will bring the footed section onto the bow shelf at full draw.

Question: Have any of you tried this and did it change your arrow flight?

Yes I have a couple with about 3" footings that come well beyond the shelf. I can't tell a bit of difference in how they fly or in point of impact..

Keuka,

I haven't found that it changes arrow flight of point of impact. I practice with both footed and non-footed shafts. They both seem to fly the same!
I used a piece of alum shaft that is just under 2" long. Works great! Here's a pic....

So Leopard do yours have inserts that go into the alloy shaft or inserts in the carbon shaft with the alloy just covering the carbon?

'cause your inserts wouldn't fit.
The idea behind footing carbons is to;

a) Strengthen the point directly behind the insert, to prevent snapping

b) To prevent the insert being forced into the carbon & splitting it along it's length.

As far as I know, Nigel (Leopard) uses the standard carbon inserts & then epoxies the footing over the outside of the shaft, flush with the end of the insert, same as I do mine.

Just make sure you bevel them the way Leopard did on the side facing the shooter.  I haven't noticed any change at all shooting these over the non-footed shafts.  I do believe it'll change your nock height slightly because of the added shaft thickness.

The only thing I would add is make sure the footing goes to the very end of the insert, if not the insert can still be shove into the shaft that little bit and weaken the shaft anyway. Shawn

I just did up a dozen for the Muzzy and started shooting them. No issues for me, but they are the first carbons I have shot.
I would highly suggest putting a half inch of aluminum(or more) at the nock end. I shot a bit Saturday and ended up splitting tow arrows from a tough impact. If you do both ends, the arrows are VERY tough.

Ishiwannabe is right about footing the nock end. The vibration from a hard hit can split the shaft there. I even saved a Robinhooded arrow due to that. It kept the arrow from going very far down the shaft. I was able to epoxy another alum sleeve onto it and it was good as new.

What shaft would fit a Carbon Express 250? Anyone use these and have footed them?

2117 & 2216 reportedly work for Heritage 250's per a number of previous threads.
