Who doesn't use string silencers...??
« on: November 04, 2020, 09:49:58 PM »
I was setting up a new string on my Kodiak T/D today.
I got my bow square, nock points and pliers. I set the brace height at 8-5/8" (about an 1/8" higher than usual)
Then I got my square, and set the nock point at the 1/2" mark.

I figured I'd take it out back and shoot it a bit, let the string "settle in" before messing around trying measure and split the strands to install wool balls.... WELL, the bow was as quiet as ever!!! Just a quiet thump as I slipped the string. Certainly not any louder than the old string with the wool balls installed.

So I said to myself... "Self, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!!" :archer:
I only shoot WOOD arrows... My kid makes them, fast as I can break them!

Haven't used them in years.  :archer:

I've heard, that "mistakes" are usually noticeable by louder then normal "noise"....
I know that when I pluck the string, I get a noticeable "twang"...
I know that when I was shooting 3-under years ago, (I'm back to shooting split finger again) my bow was considerably louder, in spite of a higher nock point and wool silencers.

Could it be, that just the extra 1/8" in brace height, quieted the bow down???

To be honest I haven’t tried not using them. Guess I have it in my head that new string, new silencers. I have the perfect candidate for the brace height idea. Would love to quite down a recurve I have.

Paracord sheaths work good, may have to tweak "spot" with GN full of arrows and big Snuffer heads.  Have noticed a bit of noise, might be my release.......?

I don’t use them on ASL’s.

Now in regard to your situation the higher the brace the less need for silencers, on recurves that is.

On my Bear td’s I very much prefer the increased performance from the lower brace height I use, 7.5”, which requires two small wool puffs for silencers.

The new string was a FF string. I set the brace height alittle high, figuring it might drop alittle after shooting it.
(it didn't) I'll keep an eye on it? But for now, I think I'll just leave it alone!! :archer2:

I just recently replaced the string on an old Martin Super Diablo that has always had silencers on it (at least for the last 20 years). I had the chrono out for something else and decided I would check the difference with and without silencers. The bow sounded like a tuning fork it rang for so long without the silencers. Speed was close enough with or without so pretty irrelevant considering the huge difference in noise with the silencers, otter fur in this case.

I find any bow is quieter with well placed well made silencers.Even bows I consider very quiet without silencers.

Really most important when hunting.Especially on alert, suspicious or highly wired deer.

For backyard or 3-D shooting it really does not matter as much.Hunting is a different perspective for me.They drop quick at the sound of a twangy string or whistling arrow for sure.Thier ears are better than humans! The quieter the better.

Try paracord sheaths as string silencers. 4x2". Refer to thread about it.
