A handful of years ago there was a bunch of posts about guys wanting to try or trying to wear solid and plaid clothing for hunting.

I remember it was some pretty big topics and guys had said they was going to try it out and see how it went.

Well I know we are years past... but for those of you who tried going to solid color clothing or plaids to hunting, what happened??

Now I know this gets under some guys skin. It does mine at times that you really aren't traditional if you don't wear wool and plaid.. let's not go there. Please

I'm just curious how things have gone for you if you switched to solid color clothes or plaids for hunting?
We all love pics as well.  :goldtooth:

Now I have tried it. And I'm still not certain in my solid clothing findings.
Plaid yeah, no problems.  I consider it just same as camo honestly. Solids, I have had no problems with solid pants with plaid or camo tops with it.

But I have had some mixed results on solid tops.
I have been just fine with solid top and camo/plaid vest obviously. But those times I'm not sure if it was my poor setup or what?
Now small game I have no trouble. This was whitetail. I have not tried solids on the Turks. No brave enough to blow a hunt to try it out.

Yeah, there was a time in there where guys wearing camouflage were criticized as looking like "Rambo" and "wild creatures" (not my quotes, I remember reading these). I like my wool clothes. There's a bunch of good wool clothes out there. I don't like the plain colors for hunting though. Much prefer my wool camo colors, and to a lesser degree plaid.

I use camo at times and plaid at times. My belief is that they are equal. I have not found solids to be as effective. It seems that a solid blob is very easy to pick up while a broken pattern does not show up so well. I have often read that lighter colored camo is usually more effective than darker patterns, and in my limited expertise, this generalization holds true most of the time. I have used plaid shirts and  Asbell's plaid anorak effectively. Also several camo patterns are in my inventory, including military Eastern Woodland pattern, Mossy Oak, and Real Tree. Still, the essence of camo effectiveness is sitting still.

Plaid wool in earth tones is warmer, quieter, and just as effective as those fancy polyester camo garments made in countries I can't locate on a map. (and often, lesser expensive)

I'm a fan of wool and agree with the plaid top.   Warm weather it's usually all old cotton camo or plaid.   The quietness of either is very hard to beat.  Don't like much of the newer synthetic for its noise and sheen let alone how baggie most of it is on me, doesn't help with long arms on a short frame.  The old stuff usually has longer sleeves.

I have used both over the years always come back to plaid wool, I just like it more and seems I can control my body temp better as well with wool.
Quiet is my goal, that and it seems to wear like iron, I have a pair of wool whip cord pants that are 20 years old and still are fine.

My problem with wool is just the physical weight of it, your tired at the end of the day wearing clothes. I love the comfort but truly don’t think its warmer, for me, than fleece and especially items with a wind stopping layer. I cant say I’ve ever been busted by the noise my clothes make either. regarding plaid vs camo, I’ve shot deer in jeans and a flannel shirt and in full camo, I don’t think it matters. I wont however wear a solid color top, I’m sure you can get away with it by i am not confident hunting in solids other than pants. My .02$

I’m a wool fan. If it’s not gray I don’t wear solid colors, they just come Camo anyway so..but wool is so mild, light absorbing, quiet, I love it, cleans itself, stays warm if it rains.  I will say wind is not your friend, but there’s ways to fix that in layering. For sitting it’s silent. But wind will rock through some brands. I usually carry a down puffy “shirt” or coat go go underneath for those bitter days.

Fleece is plastic, it’s an environmental nightmare. It’s basically a huge part of plastics being in all the water you drink if it’s city water and going into the water sheds. Microplastics. The lint from fleece.. makes sense. I just can’t support fleece but it’s fine for quiet and light obviously.  Everything is compared to wool and down. There’s a reason for that. They are the gold standards.

I see I went off topic a bit 😝

My favorite hunting shirt is my heavy plaid flannel in light greens and yellow-greens... I feel really confident wearing it with light gray fleece lined pants.
