Leather Grip?
« on: January 04, 2021, 02:52:18 PM »
Hello Everyone - I want to install a leather grip on my Howatt Hunter.  I watched a couple of Youtube videos and I think I can do it myself.  Has anyone tackled a similar project, if so, can you let me know the best leather and artificial sinew they used?  And where they got the material from?

Thanks Again!

I used some thin, 4-5 oz I got from Tandy out of there scrap box. I believe 3Rivers and maybe Big Jim have a kit? I soaked the piece for about 15 minutes then applied and used spring clamps to hold in place. I set it outside, summer temps, about 15 minutes. Took off clamps, trimmed it up and sewed it up. If I do it agian I might stamp a basket weave design in the leather for looks.

Tanned deer hide is nice leather.

Wrap the handle where you want the leather wrap with masking tape then slice it down the back of the bow and remove it. This will give you an exact pattern to trace on the leather you use. Be sure the leather you use isn't too thick. 4oz might be OK but 2oz or 3oz would be better.

Depending on your grip it may be tough getting it wrap around to tie it off.
Big Jim has an excellent video. I like beaver.

X2 Big Jim's video. That's how I do them.

Thanks for the help but after looking at the bow - Howatt Hunter I am going to chicken out. The grip has has thumb indentation which would be well above my level. If it was a normal grip I would tackle it but that thumb indentation makes it more challenging.
