Footed wood shafts?
« on: February 24, 2021, 12:43:52 PM »
Where do you get yours?

Shot one at Barefoot Traditions here in Des Moines, I couldn't believe how quiet it made the bow feel (not that the Widow was loud to begin with) but also how well it flew.

I've spent dang near countless hours tuning my carbons, and think I've got it. Was just kind of a kick in the teeth to watch Tom grab one arrow off the rack and have it fly absolutely perfect.

I won't use wood for everything, but I think for turkey season at least they'll get the job done!

I don't have any of the material to build my own arrows, so I'd like to buy some that are already stained/sealed and fletched.

Thanks!

I heard of a gentlemen making footed shafts. If i remember, his company name was Greenwood shafts. You may want to check him out. Never personally bought his product yet but I have heard and seen good things. Also a company called “the footed shaft” may have what you are after.

You can always get some cedar shafting, some quality hardwood billets (pen blanks for wood turning work great), and a thumb plane and attempt it yourself.

The traditional bowyers bible vol 3, section 10 + 11 are like the gospel to me. Those sections have all the information you need on how to build footed arrows. If I can do it so can you haha. Gabriela Cosgrove is one of my heroes.

Have a great time shooting. Wood arrows are special thats for sure.

There is a good video on Youtube where the guy makes a footed wood arrow under the guise of repairing a broken wood arrow, which would work too. Check out "fixing a broken wooden arrow" or something like that. It will be very obvious. It looks easy.

The Footed Shaft sells footed wood arrows.  They have a web site.

Surewood doesn't build footed shafts; they just make very good Doug fir shafts.  They have a web site.

Google your question and you will find where you can buy them. The run around $150.00 per dozen for bare shafts.  I have made them and they are work and I can see why they cost so much.

They are not that hard to make, if you go with the two wing and not the 4.  They can also be made with a simple single wing scarf joint but those aren't as attractive.   :shaka:

Check out the True Shaft Archery website, or call and talk to Wayne, he will be more than happy to talk to you. As a side note Wayne has acquired the Sweetland tooling to produce compressed shafts, and hopefully will be up and running with that very soon!
