2 pc takedown hardware- hinge, bow bolt or sleeve?
« on: February 27, 2021, 07:06:18 PM »
Looking at doing a takedown option. Curious about pros and cons of the various hardware options such as the hinge, bow bolt or sleeve. I"ve watched Big Jims video on doing the tenon style, and I just cannot shake that gut feeling that there are too many ways for me to turn a bow into a mater stake tryin that one right now. Looking for suggestions as far as easy of installation, feel, and potential problems of the various styles.

I have used the bolt and the sleeve, per Big Jim’s directions. The sleeve is the way to go. The bolt I used, just never worked well. Always made a noise when shot. The sleeve is quiet and when kept waxed goes together and comes apart very easy. Just follow Big Jim’s instructions and you will not have problems.

The sleeve. First thing I done was make a mock up riser the same as it would be on a finished bow out of maple. And followed Jim's videos. The first ones were not perfect but worked okay.
Keeping your tenon front to back with no taper is important. The sides can have some taper.

The sleeve for sure. Absolutely rock solid.
I even got mine apart....after a while. 😉🤔
As long as the tenon has parallel sides and you use plenty of release agent you will be fine.

The sleeve system is what I’ve tried. You can get the supplies in bulk pretty cheap from a boatbuilders supply.

Sleeve.  I've used it for two un-sculpted grip straight bows.  I bought my sleeve set from a supplier.  The hinged type I've seen and used on Asian style bows is only for low draw-weights -- well under 40#

I did my first metal sleeve type take down system a few months back. It was quite the tedious process for me but in the end it came out well.

I may have a dozen of these under my belt. Not that hard to do.

Thanks all for the input. Will give the tenon style another look.

I remove the side material with a table saw and front and back with a horse rasp. I can post some pics tomorrow

Big Jim seems to know his chit...  I have worked with F/G and his method looks sound to me...  The only thing I might change is that I don't think you need carbon fiber in the wrap...  If you want something as a depth gauge just use some black cotton cloth for a wrap or two...

Or you can use some pigmented resin and glass for 3 to 4 wraps...
