Cracked Metal Riser on Sky Bow?
« on: April 29, 2008, 01:48:00 PM »
Hi, I'm a long time lurker and was hoping for some of your expertise. I recently purchases a Sky Hunter Express bow. After cleaning off the residue from fleece that covered the inside of the riser, I found a crack that runs from the back of the riser above the shelf and then continues across the front at an angle down towards the thumb side of the grip. It does not appear to be a deep crack but it's tough to tell by looking. Is this something that can be repaired and if so how? Thanks for any advice.

I'm sorry to say...your riser is cracked and due to the fact the TD-2 riser is cast magnesium, theres really no reliable fix. The TD-2 riser was designed for target weight limbs and the Express version, often was mated with limbs upward of 70#'s...and failed at any risers weakest point.Thankfully newer casted methods and CNC'd risers form solid billets have all but eliminated this problem.

55# limbs so that might account for it. Thanks... sort of.  ;)

Magnesium can be welded. Personally, I'd find a good shop the does this sort of welding and have them attempt to fix it.
No matter what type of bow is shot, we're all archers.

For $30.00 you can get another TD3 riser.

Thought I should give an update on this. The seller was great and offered to give me my money back or buy a new riser. I didn't want to exercise that option without being absolutely sure that this riser was ruined. Figuring that if it was cracked, it wouldn't matter and if it wasn't, I'd be so relieved, it still wouldn't matter, I removed the paint in the damaged area and could see that a lot of the mark was just a deep gouge but the part where it ran over the shelf and on to the face of the riser still looked like a crack so out came the emery paper. After a bunch of work I now have some really shiny spots but NO crack. It was simply a really bad gouge. Thanks to everyone who helped out!
