Carbon starting point for lightweight bow?
« on: April 29, 2008, 02:03:00 PM »
Chase's new Morrison should be here any day and I want to start looking at some arrow possibilities. He'll be getting about 40#@his 25" draw: I'd like for him to stay with the same 200gr heads that I use 1) because I've got plenty of them and 2)because I think he needs the benefits of high FOC with this light weight. I'd like to get anywhere in the 400-500 total weight range if possible. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Easton Epic 600's.  They are available from 3 Rivers, I don't know if you can buy one or two to test.

Didn't know they had a 600.That should work I had to load up lots of weight in front on the 500 to get it right out of a 43lb bow.and my arrow was really to heavy.might have to leave a little extra length on the arrow.May have to try some of those 600.If Bob morrison carries those he will sell a single.

Gold tip entrada left kind of long like 29"s with 200 up front and a footing should fly very well with that draw and set-up. I shot them at 29.5"s with 145 grains up front out of a 39# TC longbow. If ya use the regular insert and 1.5" aluminum footing and the 200 grain head you will be around 220 grains up front and be right in that 400 grain range. Shawn

Goldtip Entrada 600s. I shoot them full length(30.5) with four 3 inch fletching and 145 grains up front. This gives me a total weight of 360-365 grains.I shoot these out of a 42 lbs. BlackCreek Banshee. With the 200 grain field point this should give him an arrow weight around 425-430 grains. John Sullens of SRTA has them in stock.

JC,

I am just getting back into the game.  I am just starting to bare shaft tune some Blackhawk Vapor 2000's that I got from Sipsey River.  John has them on sale/closeout.  Full length 30.5", 225 up front, 43# @ 27" draw - show just slightly weak for me.  I decided to get these to work on form practice and any stumpin' but will likely hunt pronghorns with them this August.  Good huntin' to you and Chase.

Thanks to all the great folks here, I am really enjoying this journey!

Ray

Forgot to add that these weighed 461 gr. without fletching.

My sons compound is 36# @24" and will probably be 45#@25 by end of summer.  Just fixed up some GT 35-55 for him they bare-shafted to 28.5" with 200gr tips and 100gr brass inserts.  They fly great and still have enough room to cut back as the draw length increases.  I got the blems from sipsey river.  Hope this helps.

JC,
I bet the Heritage 90's would work too. I think they spine around 530 ? Mason and Skyler shoot the old Thunderstorm's which were the same spine without the woodgrain finish. That Morrison is center shot, so very spine tolerant and can take a little heavier spine too. Mason's Thunderstorms are fine at his 25" draw of about 42lbs. He shoots 125-145 tips. His Dwyer is not center shot and he shoots a bareshaft now and again to make sure he is still tuned. Chase, is gonna die when he gets that bow, what a Dad !!!

JC,
Still got those CX Thunderstorm SEs I sent ya? They are the same as the Heritage 90s. Stick a 200 grain point in them and see how they work. Bet they will do the trick. They will weigh about 470 with a 200 grain point and the regular inserts.

JC,

My son has been shooting Vapour 2000's out of his Shawnee 44#'s with 175gr up front. They shoot well.

I would say the Epic 600's or any other carbon in that spine range.  Leave them long to start out.  Vapor 2000's @ 28" were too stiff for my 45# @ 26" longbow, even with 200 to 250 grains out front.

Thanks guys...appreciate the additional input.

Norb, I did get them but somewhere in the rush of everyday life, I have lost the nocks and they are a special size. Plan on getting a few from DW and see if they work too. Looks like there are a lot more options than I thought there were.

Jimmy, I could just as easily say "What a son!" He's earned it.
