How do you tie into tree with a Rock climbing harness?
«

Hello all,
So I bought a Rock climbing harness to wear in my hang-on stands as a safety system. I also bought a Hunter Safety System "Rope-style tree strap" that uses a prussic knot. My question: what kind of rope/strap do you use to run from the prussic knot/carabiner on the tree to the front of your RC harness?
I've spent the last two hours researching this on the web with no results. Any advice/help would be appreciated!

There’s a good video on You Tube, traditional Bowhunting and Wilderness podcast channel,he covers it well. Basically a length of climbing rope attached to your harness and tied to the tree. I used the system last year and loved it.

A daisy chain ( look it up at a climbing store) is a super useful and adjustable option.

I use a Purcell Prusik Loop (google it) I larks head the small loop to my harness and connect the double loop with a carabiner to the sliding prusik knot on my safety line. You are connected the whole time from the ground to your treestand. The length is also adjustable a certain amount.

You can girth hitch the rope around the tree but I prefer to attach a delta link with a scaffold knot to make going around branches easier as I move my teacher up as I climb. The prussic with the carabiner just gets adjusted to the right length for you and clips right on to your harness belay loop. If you are going to face the tree like a saddlehunter you will want to attach a bridge to your harness and clip a prussic /Carabiner to that for better positioning. Saddlehunter.com is a great resource.

Here's what I have:
https://huntersafetysystem.com/collections/lifelines-manual/products/rope-style-treestrap-1
If you scroll down there's a very good video showing how to use it in a tree with a full-body harness in a climbing tree stand.
The Prussic knot is pushed up against the rope loop to keep it from sliding down the tree if you fall. So you have to have some kind of strap to run from the Carabiner (on the Prussic knot] to your Belay loop on the front of your Rock climbing harness.
I'm trying to make this HSS product work with a rock climbing harness and a hang-on stand. Maybe I need a totally different kind of rope/knot system.

I'll get flamed for this confession, but I use a climbing harness and tie off in the stand. I do not use a Prussic on a line from ground to stand, but if I did I think I'd leave the Prussic loop/carabiner long enough to attach to my harness loop. Isn't that supposed to be the beauty of that configuration...being attached on the incline and decline and never having to detach? I suppose the downside of that is to leave it that long there would be a bit of a drop before engagement, but if your vertical rope is right beside the stand I'd think it would work. You're going to hear detractors of climbing harnesses anyway as there not as foolproof keeping you vertical after a fall as the full body.

If you have a set stand location, install a lifeline first and attach your rope with the prussic to it and to your harness so you are attached the entire time you are climbing. If you are taking the stand down every time you hunt that won’t be practical…

They also make chest harness’s for rock climbing, rappelling, and ropes courses. The rope, tie in strap, or however your attaching to your seat harness, then gets clipped into the chest harness so in the event of a fall you stay vertical.

I agree with Olddogrib, Just attach the prusik to your belay loop with a carabiner. One advantage of using a climbing harness is that you are attached much closer to your harness and a climbing fall would be much shorter than it would be with a tree stand harness.

I girth hitch a runner to the front loop. I don't like a carabineer on my harness, too noisy. I attach to my lifeline with the biner if I'm in a hang on stand. If I'm hunting a climber i have a strap that came with a tree stand that i run around the tree, then biner to that.

I do exactly as Pflum does when using my climber. Works great and no carabiner at my waist attachment is much more quiet in my opinion.

Those runners make a pretty good drag rope if you get lucky too

Whether using with a vertical line or attaching to a separate safety belt as I do they are priceless for getting hands-free to hang a tree-stand. I ain't a spring chicken anymore and I've disliked climbers since the Baker days, but mine stay up all season.
