Fixed crawl hunting suggestions
« on: September 06, 2021, 09:52:09 AM »
Interested in trying out a fixed crawl with my Jeffery royal hunter takedown. I use a bear weather rest and shoot 3 under. My anchor is the back of my jawbone in the crotch of my index and thumb. My arrow is probably just shy of an inch past my riser. From what I understand once I figure out roughly how far to crawl for 20 yards I will need to adjust nocking point for tune. Are you supposed to use the tip of a field point for point on or end of shaft. How does a longer broadhead affect point on? Any other tips before I go and try this method a month before season? Thanks

The distance you position your fixed crawl nock below your usual nock will depend on your facial structure and your anchor, so will vary, so you will have to experiment.  After you determine where it should be, you can replace the separate fixed crawl nock and your lower regular nock with a continuous serving, if you wish.  Mine is about 19 turns of .03 Halo, or about 7/8”, for a 20 yard crawl.  I dedicate that bow for fixed crawl hunting only, so I retuned the arrow at the fixed crawl position, which meant raising the upper nock 1/8” or so.  If you want to do that, you should do it before you go to the trouble of serving the whole fixed crawl distance, as there will some back and forth changes until you get everything the way you want it.

You will be using the tip of the field point or broadhead to aim, so the closer you can get them to the same length, the less change there will be in POI between the two.

When you retuned did you have to alter the spine or was the nock placement enough?

The spine didn't change, but the bare shaft impacted nock low at the fixed crawl position.

Bear in mind that finger walkers can't retune for every different distance they want to shoot, and they are some of the most accurate shooters out there, so I don't know how necessary retuning at the fixed crawl distance really is.  But since I was going to use the bow only at the fixed crawl position, I decided it couldn't hurt.

The last time I tried it on my toelke Whistler the bow was making a horrible noise so I have shyed away from it but that was a while ago and I’m a much better shooter now. I’m going to try again this week thanks for your help
