Wing RW Brazilian Bubinga “WOW”
« on: February 16, 2020, 09:26:53 AM »
This is just a few pictures of an early (1965) or so Red Wing 58” 40#@28” recurve that I just cleaned up and made a b-50 string, puff silencers, moleskin shelf plate from material I have and a home made leather strike plate that resembles a bear strike plate somewhat.
Anyway last week the Traditional Bowhunters of Md. had our annual rabbit hunt at a private lease where members invited us and I know we been doing this for like 14 years now on and off.
Well anyway two guys who I found out one had married my late cousin had brought their 3 beagles and I must say those little guys had about as much fun pushing rabbits and bringing them back to us several times as we had fun trying to connect on one.
I myself had 7 shots that day and all looked promising but those rabbits had kicked in their afterburners as soon as they hit an open field and run down the edge of fields along side of ditch’s and brier patch’s .
Now the one fella named Eddie or Edwin had  a old bow he used to hut with but said he uses a compound now but wouldn’t mind shooting his old recurve again.
So I said “Get that bow to me and I’ll get it cleaned up ,check it out and serviceable if it is ok.
Friday I get a call from a close friend named Bruce and he had the bow and met me in a nearby town so I could pick it up and get it ready for Eddie.
Yesterday morning I was starting to feel better from the flu I had so I got up early went in my shop ,turned on some old country music with a hot cup of coffee and gave this old grimy, dull finish bow a good cleaning. About 1 hour later I had it back to looking new again.
Made all the needed gadgets right in my shop from what I had and what a beautiful bow .
What I found out is it’s around a 1965/66 Wing with those tiny tips .
It has the stick on labels and here are a few pictures.
Now just got to get it back to Eddie and hope he enjoys it as much as I did getting it ready for him.in the meantime Enjoy the pictures.

Mark,
When I got it from my friend to clean up for Eddie it was on a garage floor for who knows how long?
It looked like it had old spots of mold and just years of grime with a dull finish but I thought to myself "I bet this old bow " will clean up pretty once I work on it ?
So I removed a worn out old rug rest and a very stuck on piece of heavy duty Velcro type side plate that covered the entire width of the riser about 1" high.
That was the hardest to get off from years of drying out but I got it off.
It also had two red fiber style washers stuck on the back of sight window that I carefully removed and filled where old sight screws were once drilled .
After spending 1/2 a day tinkering with it and getting the string made with puffs etc. I couldn't wait to test drive it in my shop flinging a few arrows.
I didn't want to put this old bow down cause it was so smooth with no finger pinch and arrows were shooting so good out of it.
I hope Eddie will shoot it on an upcoming stump shoot and possibly hunt with it once again and give the compound a long rest lol.
Eddie was so kind as the Tradbowhunters of Md. took up a collection in a hat for him and his friend for bringing their dogs and hitting the brush all day and they refused the money and said just put it back into the club.
So I felt the best thing I could do was put in some elbow grease and a little time and get his old bow back to service.
I can't wait to see his face when he see's how pretty the bow came out and I hope he will join us next time in trying to stop these rabbits  :archer:

Wing made some of the best recurves ever. I've had plenty and still have managed to keep two Thunderbirds. The red wing hunters are great bows the shoot flat out with just about anything out there now. Seriously.

I think the Bubinga is "African Rosewood".  Brazillian Rosewood is  darker and more luxurious looking.

It looks really good. I'd say it is a great find. I came across one close to 10 years ago. The old guy I got it from said he bought it new in 1959 and hunted with it for part of one season. The Red Wing Hunter is a very attractive bow. Congratulations on such a find.

Sam and everyone I didn’t find the Bubinga one above I posted a few years ago . It belongs to a guy that needed a string made so I took some extra time and cleaned it up and put a shelf rest and a side plate for him as well.
Then I liked it so much I began a search for one with Brazilian Rosewood and found this 1962 year and here it is .

Wow,nice find Keef! That Brazilian rosewood is definitely darker. I"m thinking the Howatt Hi-speeds were made with the same wood.
