Spliced lamination/ core question
« on: November 12, 2021, 10:54:20 AM »
My son and I starting to build a couple of 58” recurves. The stack is 035 glass belly, 075 lam belly, 075 lam back and 035 glass back.

My question is seeing how I have no central core lamination can I still make my lams spliced like in the picture.

Where exactly is that splice going to be located?

Either 4” from the tips or mostly in the riser fades depending on how I orient them. If it would make a difference I could use a solid elm lam on the belly?

I would go mid limb or the tip as you say. And a scarf joint over the center of the riser if needed.

Personally I would want the joint to be much longer and not line up on both lams.

Maybe like the top sets of lams here...

That will be easier to glue too!

Now we wait for the smooth-on to cure. Thanks for input everyone.
Next step is to make a circle jig for the band saw so I can start the risers.
Anybody have plans or pictures of a quick and easy jig?

That will be for veneers NOT core lams?

My recipe doesn’t have any cores, only a 0.075” belly lam and 0.075” back lam.

Will the fail without a core?
I’m hoping for 35-40lb target bow

I  don't know, I've never done it that way, always just the veneers.

I recall Sam Harper did a write up a similar build, that included success and failure.  Don't know if it's sill floating around the cloud or not.
Poorfolksbows was his website, but it's been gone a while. Thats not to say digging around won't find a remnant.

I have no idea if they will fail, but I'd for sure put the splices in different areas back and belly...

Is there any reason that I can’t adjust the stack so that I have a belly veneer a core and a back veneer as long as the stack thickness ends up the same?
My first bow a few years ago was a failure and so far I’ve invested a bite more time and money into this attempt, I’d hate for it to be scarp from the start.

Veneers and a core lam would be much better IMO

I would still try not to have splices lined up back and belly

The only way they would ever line up is if I was trying not to line them up. Lol
