Carbon to wood
« on: November 27, 2021, 07:15:02 AM »
Currently shooting a 29.5 inch .500 spine carbon with 100 grain insert and 200 grain tip out of a 46 lb bow.  Id like to some woods and shoot the old olive green/tan bear razor heads(dont know there weight yet) i wouldnt be against woodie weights if needed.  Any suggestion in wood spine or 3 spine ranges i should get for testing?

Without the extra tip weight I would start with 50-55 or 55-60. I shoot cedars 29” back of point with a 49# longbow and 50-55 works well with broadheads up to 160 grain

Jesse,
If you are wanting to keep the high FOC you have with your carbon setup, then a 70/75 or 75/80 spine is probably what you are looking for. The old bear Razorheads are probably going to be in the 115 - 125 grain category depending upon whether you use the bleeder blades or not. I shoot a total of three hundred up front out of a 41# @ 30” draw long bow using Douglas Fir shafts. My arrows are 30 5/8” from valley of nock to back of a 100 grain woodie weight. My hunting partner is shooting the same shafts and weight up front  at 29.5” long to back of woodie weight out of a Bear Grizzly recurve that is 45# at 28”. You are going to be shooting a lot heavier arrow with this setup. 760 - 800 grains.

Use the 3rivers spine calculator. Err on the side of over spine . Buy a test pack with different spines.
Pray like Tuck and shoot like Robin.
