What about honey locust wood
« on: May 02, 2008, 03:44:00 PM »
I know that black locust is a good bow wood, but what about honey locust?
I have an abundant supply right behind my house.

I can tell you it looks wonderful under clear glass if you build glass bows.  Beyond that I have no experience with it.  Hopefully someone who knows will chime in.

Also, I'm wondering how to go about it from a stave?
Would one just take off the bark like hickory or go down to the heartwood and follow a ring like on osage or have it cut into board form?

Treat it like osage and get a ring in the heartwood.  From what I gather, its a little weaker than black locust so I would go a touch wider than you would with BL, and a bit wider than you would with osage.  The one stave I had of the stuff blew up on me :-(  I would love to try it again though, its a beautiful wood.  I was thinking of going 1.5 to 1.75in wide.
