Is this a bad idea?
« on: November 02, 2021, 08:14:51 PM »
There’s a knot and a void in a core lam I made, within an inch or so of center.  If I were to use this as a parallel core lam, would that void be a problem?

That’s what I was thinking, as long as I get plenty of glue in there it should just be solid.  I just wanted to run it by someone; I have lots of maple lams with a little knot right at the end.

As long as it doesn't break if you have to bend it to fit riser it will be fine...
Stay sharp, Kenny.

Thanks guys, good to know for sure.  I really appreciate how willing everyone is to answer questions like this.  I’ve put off using these even though I was pretty sure they’d be fine.

I was going to glue one of them up tonight, but I did the dry run and it seems apparent that the gap between the top and bottom of my press needs to be smaller, so I’m going to work on it first.  The hose was too rounded.

Heck all my bow wood looks like that, some make it most don't. LOL

It will be fine in the center.

Thanks!  I like the way these turned out so far.  The first time I tried to do them I glued each individual piece at the same time I did the riser. Believe it or not, that’s not the best way.  Lol.

I’m pretty much done with these, both turned out really pretty, one I had to run through the drum sander to 1.25” and then cut to 62” because of lam slipping at glue up again, but they both turned out just fine.  All that’s left is some cleanup sanding and spray finish. Thanks Kenny, the charcoal turned out much better for a core on the second.

Bows look great. The kind of table they are resting on, is that some kind of table for sanding?

Bue, I am pretty sure that's a downdraft sanding table.   Wish I had one, maybe I'll have to create a redneck version.....

That table is a downdraft sanding table; it’s got a 4” port to hook up to dust collection, and it keeps things from getting out of hand using tools that don’t have dust collection built in, like that little 2” angle grinder.  You could probably make one for cheap, but that one was less than $200.
