Questions of Alum. to Carbon
« on: February 23, 2022, 11:06:05 AM »
I normally shoot 2219's with 300grains up front.  I'm playing around with some carbons to achieve high FOC. As I bare shaft, they're now hitting where I look out to 25 yards. A few questions:

1-Is it common to have to adjust nock height going aluminum to carbon? I had to adjust 5/8 for Alum. to 3/8 for Carbon (they flew very nock high until I lowered the nock height)

2-The arrows are hitting where I look, but the arrows aren't without some "wag" in flight.  Am I asking too much for clean arrow flight with a bare shaft?

(These are Easton 6.5's in the 340 with 400 up front)

Thanks for your help in advance,

Mike

Personally, I have found going from a 22xx shaft to a 340 carbon, the arrow diameter is less, so I have to compensate with lower nock height.

There is more variation in spine between carbon shafts than between aluminum shafts.  However, if your carbon bare shaft is straight, you should be able to tune it without any wobble. But you can't be sure that all the rest of your carbon shafts will fly exactly the same, unless you check them.

You could be picking up wobble from shelf bounce.  3/8” nock height seems a little low to me.

I fletched up the test shaft with 4" parabolics, I did end up raising the nock to 1/2".

After footing with 1-1/2" of 2117 then  bareshafting and taking off 1/4" at a time, the sweet spot turned out to be 30-1/4".

The tip set up is a 125G steel insert, 100g woody weight, and a 190g field tip, for a total of 415g.

Shaft is 328G, total arrow weight is 743.

FOC is 31.4%

Flies well and is giving roughly twice the penetration of my 789g 2219's

Next, I'll see how she rolls with a broadhead

I'm booked for a Newfoundland moose hunt this September.  Hunted Tuckamore lodge in '21, no moose to stalk (Blew a gale for a week).  Trying Efford's this year. I'll probably mess with the EFOC and carbons, then end up going back to aluminum for the hunt! Hard to get an old dog to change his ways.  Fun to mess around with, and gets me shooting a lot and paying attention to form anyway.

I forgot to say John at the Footed Shaft walked me through and supplied all the components, he is really a knowledgeable, friendly, (and patient) guy.

The diameter difference will change your nock set and dynamic spine because the thinner carbon is more center-shot.

Yes, ended up settling on a nock height for the new carbons of 1/2”. All my bows shoot aluminum best at 5/8”.  The new shafts are flying well out to 20 yards. Need to get to my club to stretch out to 40.  I’ll also get a lighted nock and shoot em at dusk to see just how good the arrow flight is.
