Icewood SR??
« on: May 29, 2022, 03:49:05 AM »
A friend of mine turned me onto this bowyer in the Baltics. Bows are very affordable but more importantly he has this option for riser and veneers called Icewood SR. After seeing a picture I felt I HAD to have a bow with it. That being said I would rather build one myself or Bribe Kirk with more deer pepperoni and firewood haha. So my question is, does anyone know where to get this? Or am I stuck forking over 550 bucks to get one of his bows? Here is a picture for reference with his handle to make sure he gets credit.

Thats odd looking wood. They must have colored it somehow to get that effect.
There is an Australian Tree called Silver Silkwood, thats also known as Icewood. Dunno if its the same.
Ooo, who, who hangs free

It is most likely Saraifo-wood; I only found veneer, full wood seems to be out of stock at the moment:

https://designholz.com/furniere/saraifo-furnier/birke-gemasert/2054/birke-gemasert-furnier-saraifo-burr-maserbirke-250x64cm

Google translation of the info:
Product information "Birch grained veneer SaRaiFo burr curly birch 250x64cm"

This is birch burl SaRaiFo* veneer grained. This veneer is pressed from many fine real wood lamellas in several production processes/surface glued (E1) and then processed into this flat veneer and is partly evenly to wildly grained. Veneers are only available in raw cuts! NEW: The backs of the veneers are lined/reinforced with fleece. Easier processing, increased flexibility and reduced risk of breakage are just three of the advantages! The veneer with fleece is simply processed like any other veneer (glued, ironed on...) and comes/stays on the underside or back. Without glue. If you light this veneer from behind, the dark grain comes to the fore. This veneer is therefore particularly suitable for lampshades, tables and wall coverings that are illuminated from behind/from below. (last photo)

* SaRaiFo = Save the RainForest (protect the rain forest): If you process this veneer, you contribute to the fact that the tropical tree population is relieved and thus protected. By purchasing SaRaiFo products, you can contribute your own personal part! SaRaiFo wood veneers are made from peeled veneer of very fast-growing types of wood (usually ajous (Abachi), poplar, lime). The veneers are freed from wood defects and glued/compacted/pressed into a solid block in many different optimized production steps, in order to then use a special process to slice designer veneers from real wood.

Advantages of these veneers:
- Relief of already endangered tropical tree species
- consistent optics always available in large quantities
- Back lined/reinforced with fleece (easier handling, cutting, editing - is much more stable)
- natural wood surfaces/decor
- large areas (instead of narrow strips) up to 64cm wide
- Easier processing (no annoying joining)
- Time and cost savings in processing
- almost every wood design can be realized - contact us if you want to implement new ideas
- NEW: now also partly available in solid wood (density: approx. 650-800kg/m3)

Yes, thats the Birch or Betulla Saraifo.

Nice stuff. But it turns a bit yellow'ish over time.

The Saraifo, in General, ist pretty nice stuff. Heavy, stable, no exotic trees are hurt...

But i stopped using IT, because almost every bowyer (good ones, OK ones, and Not so good ones) ist using it....
