Help me select shafts for my son's new longbow
« on: May 06, 2008, 08:14:00 AM »
I have not yet started making the arrows to go with the longbow I am building for my son (in the build along thread) I was thinking of going with carbon but have never used carbons with my longbow. I like wood but want to have him start out with carbons. My question is about spine and brand. The bow is #48 at 28 inches and after having him draw the bow, It looks like the shortest I would cut the arrows is 29" I plan to have a front heavy arrow with perhaps a brass insert and a 150 grain head so that he is shooting 10 grains per pounds or a 480-500 grain arrow. Can anybody help a carbon dummy select a shaft so that I might start making his arrows??

I was thinking of getting either Carbon Express Heritage 150's or Gold Tip 35-55 XT hunters. Am I in the ballpark or is there a better way to go??

You're right in the ball park. Either one should work. With 200 grains up front, start 30" bop and cut 1/4" off at a time until it bare shafts for you.
