I had a Shrew hawk I used for years, that got lost last season.  Was thinking of just replacing it with a hatchet, but prefer the lighter pole hawk.
Anyone recommend a reasonable pole hawk or hatchet to replace it?  Looking online gets lost in noise and prefer fellow understanding of real work.

I have two really nice throwing hawks that I bought from, Beaver Bills. Excellent hand forged hawks. They have several different sizes to choose from. Just Google.

I think you can still get the shrew hawk at williamstown forge, beaver bill is an excellent choice also

I'm sorry, what is the difference in a tomahawk and a hatchet? I grew up with the teaching they are one and the same.  I do know my dad had a small hatched that we used to pole out game. It was probably two thirds the size of a normal hatchet.

I have a CRKT Woods Chogan that I got for $50. absolutely love it. I also like to find old hatchet heads and rehandle them. Here is one I did and gave to my dad with a sheath I made as well.

Mike, other than the head shape/weight and cutting edge length (hawk is normally shorter), the main difference is how the handle attaches. A hawk handle is tapered and is a slip/friction fit in an oval eye on the head. Allows easy replacement and disassembly for packing.

This is a forged hawk made for me by my friend Dylan Holderman and the over the shoulder sheath I made for it.



...and a railroad spike hawk I traded a recurve selfbow for with Bobby Keller a bladesmith from Wilkesboro, NC. Bobby also made the knife above the spike hawk.
