What is your Elk hunting setup?
« on: July 26, 2022, 09:05:06 AM »
After shooting a compound for 40 years I took up the recurve just before Thanksgiving and I will never shoot the compound again barring injury. I am addicted,

My son and I went on a DIY elk hunt in 2019. 2020 we canceled due to Rona and then my son joined the Navy last fall. Barring an unforeseen deployment we want to go back next year to Colorado.

My Current setup is an EXE Scream 21", Uukha Gobi Mediums 43lbs OTF. Uncut GT Hunter 400's with 225 grain tips and 4-4" feather. TAW 535 gr., Springy rest and either Magnus Stingers or Original Muzzy 3 blades. For elk I would use either the Magnus or VPA 3 blades. My draw length is 29.75".

What is your elk set up, Bow, arrow, broadhead, draw weight, draw length and total arrow weight?

Thanks in advance!
EXE Scream 21" Riser, Uukha Gobi Medium limbs 43 otf,  Springy rest, GT Hunters tipped with Simmons Swamp Shark. TAW 560 gr at 170fps

Still subject to change, but at this point I'm leaning toward my 50# Northern Mist Shelton, 600 grain forgewood arrows tipped with Zwickey No Mercy two-blade heads.

I lean towards my MOAB (63#) or Big River LB (66#).  Both with 700 grain footed cedar, 5" Shield cut, 190 grain Snuffer, Grizzly Instinct or VPA heads.

58lb Black Widow Recurve, 27.5" Legacy 2117 arrows and tipped with the Magnus Stinger two blade. As setup, arrow weight is about 570 grains. I'm looking forward to the westward trip in about a month!

In my dreams when hunting elk over in North America, I am carrying my Black Widow PCH that I pull about 62# with, and my arrow setup that is about 600gns total with 265 up front. Kayuga Pilot Cut with wide bleeders (200gn broadhead).

Hopefully one day I can get to the other side of the world to chase elk. If I do, I will mostly likely be carrying this setup.

Not going this year.  A low 50’s bow at my 31.5” draw length.  600 grain plus arrows.  A typical set up for all my hunting.

Buying preference points.

This has been my set up on my last three or four elk hunts. Hoyt Satori with Uuhka VX+HM limbs at 54lbs. Arrow is 3Rivers Traditional Only 400 spine with 150 grain four blade Magnus II broadhead. 50 grain brass inserts and weights attached to the insert to bring FOC up, total arrow weight at 540 grains. It's been a very good performer. Will use this same set up for Wisconsin bear this fall.

It's been a few years since I've bow hunted elk but here is the set-up I used.

Bear Kodiak Takedown, tapered maple arrow with three 5" shield left wing fletching, magnus classic broadhead, 67# at my 28 1/2" draw length, arrow weight 610 grain. The attached picture is my biggest bull I've killed.

I’ve used several different setups for elk but all have been similar for the 6 trad elk I’ve taken. The latest is a 50# Quinn Stallion recurve shooting 650gr aluminum arrows with 2 blade Zwicky Eskimo heads.

My elk set up has been the same for the last 10 trips. Bigriver 64" 2 piece takedown longbow at 54#. 400 mfx old stock carbons, Magnus 4blade 150 grain stingers. Arrow weight is right at 540 grain. The whole setup fits in a small arrow box and packs nicely. I can get my gloves, armguard and Great Northern quiver in there too.
