Long Bow help
« on: June 17, 2023, 03:14:17 PM »
Hello all! Yep, another tool in the shed and it’s an HH style flat bow, my first…. Well, not exactly. When I was in “let’s build one” mode, I got one of the 3R flat hickory bows, mostly finished except final tillering, and sand n seal. It was a long bugger and had no reinforced grip area. The bow came rounded on all edges so adding lams to build it up was a bit more than I wanted to swing so I just got it tillered evenly and shot it. So much hand shock it quickly became behind the door fodder. So now, I got a very nice bow and there is quite a bit of hand shock and I am just not accurate at all with it. So it must be me. It has a pretty straight grip so that could be part, but I really don’t know much except to grip and rip as a relaxed thumb to forefinger just doesn’t feel secure or right.

It can take time to get used to the feel of a different bow. You'll have to experiment a bit to find what it likes and dislikes. I'm going through this with one of my ILF recurves, shoots great with one pair of limbs but with another set 5 pounds heavier, you'd swear I was shooting something completey different.

Johnny,
Sorry you are having trouble with your new bow. I had experience with Robertson Stykbow, Pronghorn, Liberty, Northern Mist, JD Berry. All were 66-68” bows. I only had trouble with one as far as hand shock and knowing what I now know I suspect even with that it was more about how I gripped the bow.

My last bow that I bought has a straight grip and I really like it so there is that. I heard Cody Greenwood(maybe?) say with long bows you have to pick one and shoot that one longbow instead of jumping back and forth with bows. For some of us (including me) I think there is a lot of truth to that statement.

At this point I started typing in a bunch of form factors but I deleted them. I didn’t start feeling good about shooting a longbow until I spent some time with Arne Moe who taught me quite a bit about consistently shooting a longbow. Sadly, Arne passed on but perhaps the videos he did are still available. Or get with Tom Clum. There are others that I can’t think of right now. Perhaps others can suggest them.

It would be well worth your time to get with one of these guys.

MnFn, sad to say, but knowing myself, I am sure what you say strikes darn close to the point of my problem. One thing I must realize is that it is a new bow. Spent more time with her and it was not all bad. It is stouter than all others, so there is that. I do feel good about the prospects of this bow, but I will have to hide the rest for awhile, and maybe and long while. Thanks for your input, wise words!  :campfire:
