Long bows

Just curious how many people currently regularly hunt with bows 68”?  I have a 68” Liberty English and I really like the shooting characteristics of this bow. From the ground it wouldn’t be a problem but wonder if it is much of problem from elevated stands.

As long as you are aware what's around you, both overhead and your stand there shouldn't be any problem.

The great thing about a longbow is you can cant that bow over to about any angle you need to match the situation.  66 to 70in longbows are all I shoot.

I'm a short, longbow guy.  60-62", maybe 64".  G. Fred calls them "straight limbed recurves".

Brently, I remember hearing that on John Shultz’s video where he said the same thing about canting or laying the bow over  when shooting a longbow from a stand. I think he recounted how he advised a friend to lay the bow over on its side  when he was taking a shot on a bear. 

That doesn’t seem natural to me, so I guess I need to get out and practice that shot some. And that is what I love about our chosen  way of hunting.  I love practicing with my equipment whereas with some of my friends it seems like a chore to them.

I have 5 HHA bows, 2 NM bows, 3 Bamboo Longhunters, and a Deathwish bow by Steve Welte. I hunt almost exclusively from elevated stands and have learned to handle my bow so the length doesn't cause problems.

Spoke to Eric this week and placed a St Patrick Lake American Styk on order RH 68" 35@28 for plucking cedar arrows around in the back yard.

I dont like shooting a longer bow from  stand especially at close targets it gets up against my chest and catches my clothes.

66” length is about as short as I go anymore. I love LONG bows and SHORT shots

I REALLY enjoyed hunting with my HH 68 inches, but it was not able to go on a lot of hunts as I hunt a lot of thick stuff where that length is too limiting.

However I did take it to the big woods many times in Cohutta and such.  It was 78#s and I would like to find a 60#er for sure now.

When shooting a longer longbow from a tree it should not be much of problem for shots side to side and out front.But for shots more behind you the lower string can get in the way of the treetrunk.Especially on fat trees.So you need to lean out a bit in my experience to get string clearance on shots more behind you or the trunk can get in the way of the string behind the lower limb at full draw in a canted shooting position

That can cause you to have to move more than you like on that shot and potentially get cracked easier.

Other than that you may have to cut more limbs for on the tree to account for the longer bow and try and not tink your bow against the stand base as you move it around when you might have to shoot while seated especially.

Some of the more narley trees I hunted out of I preffered a shorter bow.

I shot most my game with 64 inch longbows.Thier are advantages though to the shorter bows in situations you may find yourself in at times.

I make BBO longbows and 64 inches is my favorite bow. Never had a problem with that length. Just different strokes for different folks.

I shoot 68” HH longbows and don’t find it a real problem.  I guess it would depend on your stand/set up.  The more time you spend shooting your bow the more your subconscious knows where your limb tips are.  No doubt a 30” super wizbang compound would be easier to maneuver but I choose to shoot a 68” longbow and make it work.

I have no problem with my 68" kohannah from my hang on or ladder stands. I don't use it with my climber because of the rail. Shots behind the tree are impossible though.
