Bear hide back quiver
« on: February 24, 2023, 04:43:55 PM »
I built a leather back quiver following a build along on tradgang a few years ago. I would like to build a back quiver using a hide from a Manitoba black bear I harvested last June. Pictures please.

The third quiver from the left I made around 1993-94.  Bear hides are really thin, I built a quiver from a heavier leather and then glue and sewed the bear hide to it.  I have seen some made by lining the bear hide with cloth or thin leather then making the quiver, they looked really nice. The shoulder strap incorporated one of the front legs sewn/glued to a 1” leather strap.  I made three quivers out of that bear hide this was the first one, the other two were gifts to my stepson and Brother Bob.  The bear was taken in the spring and right rear leg was rubbed really bad, I used that paw for the pocket cover on the second quiver from he left.  Bear quiver #2 looked a lot better then #1, bear quiver #3 looked the best.  Hopefully one learns and incorporates new methods with whatever they build.

Send me a PM if you want to go into the details of how I built mine and what I would do different if I build another one.
The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is nowhere as important as being able to place it in the correct spot.

Thanks for the info, had a shoulder mount made of the bear and have a good size piece the taxidermist saved for me.

You could use thin leather like pig skin or calf skin to glue the bear hide to. Use contact cement and when cutting any fur on hides cut it from the flesh side or you will have hair everywhere. A sharp razor knife will work for both the hair on hide and the thin leather liner.
Not a back quiver but this is a Plains style coyote style quiver I made and donated to the raffle table at the Tenn Classic a few years back. I used commercial deer hide for rge backing and decorative parts.

And another Plains style coyote quiver I made for a Christmas Trade on PA. I use red upholstery leather for the lining and decorative parts of this quiver.
