Pin knots in Osage stave
« on: January 08, 2023, 05:09:44 AM »
Voice from the past here. Question for self bowyers. How do you deal with pin knot travelling right through stave. Is it ok to cut it back on the belly or treat it the same as on the back?

If the pins runs back to belly and are not near the edge they are usually no problem. Be sure when you work to a clear back ring that you don't violate the ring around the pin knots. Don't just flatten the back through the pins.
Don't forget to post pics of the finished bow.

How many pin knots are there?
They can make a great look to the bow
If some are on the edge make a bump around them (follow the grain lines around them

Pins on the belly are no problem. For knots on the edge try to keep a little meat around them on the outside or go inside and remove them all together.
I don't like to keep an island around knots because they can lift a splinter that can carry down ti the ring below. Smooth, clean back around the pin. The pins will be raised from the back so be careful around them.

I have not had a problem with pins or pine clusters anywhere on an osage bow, my last bow had 6 pin clusters on the edges of the bow, never been a problem, I don't pay any attention to them.

Thanks Eric, appreciated. That is reassuring. Any problems with straight line checks on the back . Drying splits, as these staves were badly neglected.

As long as they don't run off the edge.
super glue them

I would get the near handle wood bending more but leave the fades and out alone..  The last 10 inches out to the tips are bending enough.

You have not strung it yet?

Don't until the tiller is right.

Jawge
