Little help with a longbow here
« on: February 20, 2023, 09:03:00 AM »
Been away for a while and hopefully back to shooting some more. I've been shooting bows with wheels and recurves for some time now. I have the itch for a long bow. Had surgery to repair a snapped tendon in my right arm (I'm right handed) and haven't pulled a bow since July/August of last year. My 72 year old right shoulder has a bit of arthritis and it gets all upset if I do too much with it. My draw length is 29 to 29 1/2 depending on whether I get the back tension to work right. I live in down South Alabama and would like to find an archery shop down here with a longbow I could try. Doesn't seem to be happening. Anyone live down here who shoots longbows? Any shoots about to happen in this area? Currently, I have a 45lb Bear Kodiak Hunter 58" made in 1967 that I'm going to start shooting again, but the longbow itch needs scratching. Have been looking (online) at tons of longbows and the one I'm pretty much set on is a Maddog. Just have to decide which one.

Don't wait to long, I believe Mike is retiring from bow making this summer sometime.

I live 20 minutes west of Mobile in Mississippi and could arrange for you to shoot one of my buddies. Quints Sporting Goods in Saraland Al has a number of used Traditional bows you may call and ask about longbows in your desired weight. These are use so make sure the strings are on them before your trip

Thanks a lot. Didn't know Quints had any Trad stuff. I know Brad and Dell very well. I'll call them. Thanks for the offer of your buddie's help. May PM you back about it. I get down to Mobile about once a month for work.

Yep, if you want a Maddog, better hurry! I believe Mike said he'd be closing down between Mar. - May time frame. I got my order in before he's done!

Too late for me. Mike said he is closing up in March. Said he is wrapping up the last of the bows to be built. Slight chance he might have enough materials left to build me one if I call at the end of March which I will. Oh well.....

Check with Steve Turay. Maybe he can help. Steve is located near Montgomery in Ramer. He makes good stuff.
